Why airlines ask for two names
Airline booking forms ask for a First Name and a Last Name because the ticket must match the passport. Many passports show only a Given Name and leave the Surname blank. When that happens, each airline has its own way to fill the two fields. Some ask you to repeat the name. Others ask for FNU, short for First Name Unknown, in the First Name field. My passport has only one name. What do I enter?
A passport with one name usually has the Given Name filled in and the Surname blank. Airline booking forms still ask for both a First Name and a Last Name, and each airline has its own convention. What does FNU mean?
FNU stands for First Name Unknown. Air India, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways ask for it in the First Name field when the passport shows a single name, according to their published guidance.
Can I invent a surname to fill the field?
No. The name on the ticket must match the name on your ID, and a mismatch can cause problems at check-in or boarding. Use the airline's single-name rule instead of making up a surname.
Can I fix the name after booking?
Name changes are restricted and rules differ by airline. Check your airline's rule before you pay.
Can I travel to the UAE with a single-name passport?
Air India's published guidance says travel documents bearing only a single name are not permitted entry to the UAE. It lists exemptions, such as a UAE employment visa. Check with the airline before you book.
What if my airline isn't listed?
