About this experience
Louvre Abu Dhabi sits on Saadiyat Island under a 180-metre steel dome designed by Jean Nouvel. Some 7,850 stars perforate the eight layers of the dome, and as the sun moves the light filtering through creates the shifting pattern the architect called a "rain of light".
The museum breaks from the usual division by civilisation. Instead, twelve chapters run chronologically and place works from different cultures side by side, so an Egyptian, a Chinese and a European object from the same century share a room. The collection spans prehistory to the contemporary, with loans from thirteen French institutions alongside its own holdings. The museum is closed on Mondays.
