6-Day Azerbaijan Itinerary: Baku, Gabala and Sheki for First-Timers

Six days is enough to see Azerbaijan's three headline stops properly, provided you resist the urge to squeeze in a fourth town. This route covers Baku, Gabala and Sheki, the same combination most published itineraries converge on, with two nights in each base. For an Indian traveller booking a direct Delhi-Baku flight, six days is also a practical length against a standard leave block, easily covered by a single work week plus a weekend on either side, and it lines up with the Rs 55,000 to Rs 1,25,000 per person budget range covered in our full cost breakdown.

Day 1: Arrive and explore the Old City

Land in Baku, check in, and spend the afternoon in Icherisheher (the Old City). Climb the Maiden Tower for your first sweeping view over the Caspian Sea, then walk through to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a 15th-century royal residence and one of the country's most important historic sites. End the day at the Boulevard for the illuminated Flame Towers.

Day 2: Gobustan, Yanar Dag and Baku by night

Take a half-day trip south to Gobustan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 6,000 prehistoric rock carvings depicting hunts, dancing figures and early musical instruments, often paired with a stop at the nearby mud volcanoes. In the afternoon, head to Yanar Dag, the "Burning Mountain," a natural gas fire that has blazed continuously on a hillside for decades and is most dramatic after sunset. Return to Baku for dinner at Fountain Square.

Day 3: Baku to Gabala

Drive north to Gabala, a town in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus known for mountain landscapes and historic monuments. En route or on arrival, visit the historic Juma Mosque. Check into your Gabala hotel and spend the evening settling into the cooler mountain air.

Day 4: Gabala's nature and adventure side

Spend the day at Nohur Lake and the Tufandag Mountain Resort, where the cable car and outdoor activities range from hiking to zip-lining, with skiing in winter. Gabala's summer climate is noticeably cooler than Baku's, making this a comfortable day even in peak season.

Day 5: Gabala to Sheki

Travel on to Sheki, historically a major Silk Road trading town. The centrepiece is Sheki Khan's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed 18th-century building famous for its shebeke windows, intricate stained glass assembled without nails or glue. Spend the afternoon exploring the old town and the historic Karvansaray.

Day 6: Sheki to Baku and departure

Drive back to Baku, stopping if time allows at Shamakhi, one of the Caucasus' oldest cultural and trading centres, known for its historic mosque. Arrive back in Baku in time for a last dinner or a late-night departure.

The route at a glance

If you only have 4 or 5 days

Drop Sheki and extend Baku by a day, or swap Sheki for Shahdag if a mountain resort day (roughly 2.5-3 hours from Baku each way) interests you more than the UNESCO palace town. Trying to fit Baku, Gabala, Sheki and Shahdag into fewer than 7 days generally means one of them gets reduced to a rushed half-day, which most travellers regret in hindsight.

What to book ahead

Reserve your Gabala and Sheki hotels before you land, since options are more limited outside Baku than the capital's own hotel market. A private driver for the Gabala and Sheki legs is the most common way travellers cover this route, since public transport between these towns is not built around tourist schedules.

An optional Baku add-on: the Heydar Aliyev Center

If you have a spare few hours on Day 1 or 2, the Heydar Aliyev Center is worth the detour. Designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2013, its sweeping, angle-free architecture is unlike anything else in the city, and it houses a conference hall, gallery hall and museum. It sits a short taxi ride from both the Old City and the Boulevard, so it slots into either day without derailing your schedule.

What most travellers get wrong on this route

The single biggest planning mistake is under-budgeting time for Sheki. The Khan's Palace itself takes under an hour to walk through, but the surrounding old town, the Karvansaray and the local crafts market genuinely reward a slower half-day, and travellers who arrive late from Gabala and try to see Sheki in an hour before dinner consistently regret it. If your schedule is genuinely tight, it is better to shorten Gabala by half a day than to rush Sheki.

Packing notes specific to this route

Because this itinerary moves between a coastal capital and mountain foothills within the same week, pack one warm layer even for a summer trip; Gabala and Sheki evenings run noticeably cooler than Baku regardless of season. Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than almost anywhere else on a typical Azerbaijan trip, given the amount of time spent on cobbled Old City lanes, palace interiors and unpaved paths around Gobustan and the mud volcanoes.
