Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan: Month by Month Weather Guide

Kazakhstan's weather is not subtle. Almaty runs from an average July high of 30.5C down to an average January low of -8.1C, and that 38-degree swing is the single biggest factor in what your trip looks like.

The good news is that it is predictable. This is a continental climate, not a monsoon one, so the seasons behave roughly as advertised.

The numbers, month by month

These are Almaty averages, the base for almost every Indian itinerary.

Annual rainfall is about 675 mm. Note where it falls: April is the wettest month at 112 mm, with May not far behind at 99 mm.

Two things to correct before you plan

First, Almaty's numbers are not the mountains' numbers. Every figure above is city-level. Shymbulak sits at 2,230 metres and its top cable-car station at 3,163 metres. Expect 10 to 15 degrees colder, and colder still in wind. A 30C July day in the city is a jacket day at the top of the lift.

Second, spring is not the shoulder season here. In most destinations April is the clever choice. In Kazakhstan it is the wettest month, mountain roads are unreliable, the high lakes are still under snow, and the ski season is winding down. It is the one window I would actively steer a first-time visitor away from.

June to September: the season most people want

This is the default, and for good reason. Warm and dry, with September the driest month of the year at 28 mm.

• Mountain trails are open and the alpine meadows above Shymbulak are green.
• Big Almaty Lake is at its turquoise best from glacial melt.
• The Kolsai and Kaindy roads are passable.
• Charyn Canyon is accessible, though brutally hot on the canyon floor in July and August, where there is no shade and no water.

If I had to pick a single month, it would be September: still warm at an average 24.5C high, the driest month of the year, and past the summer peak in both heat and crowds. June is the second pick.

December to March: the ski season, and a genuinely good trip

Kazakhstan's winter is the underrated half. The Shymbulak season runs from mid to late November until close to May, one of the longest in the region thanks to its 2,200 to 3,200 metre altitude.

January and February are cold in the city, averaging below freezing at night, but this is dry cold rather than wet cold, and Almaty is well set up for it. Medeu's rink is working, the mountains are white, and the whole city changes character.

The trade-offs are real. The high lakes are closed or unreachable. Charyn is open but cold and stark. Mountain roads close on snow, sometimes at short notice. A winter trip is a ski and city trip, not a lakes trip, and building it any other way leads to disappointment.

October and November: quiet, cheap, and a gamble

October is genuinely pleasant, averaging 5.4C to 16.9C, with autumn colour in the gorges and far fewer people. It is the best value month of the year.

November is the in-between. The ski season starts mid to late month, but early November has neither snow nor summer. If you go in November, go late.

April and May: the honest warning

April brings 112 mm of rain, the year's peak, and snow can still fall in April and occasionally into May. May brings 99 mm.

What that means practically: unreliable mountain roads, closed or half-closed high-lake access, a canyon that is fine but often grey, and a ski season on its last legs. The countryside is beautifully green in May, which is the one argument for it, and late May is noticeably better than early May.

If your dates are fixed to April, plan a city-and-lower-mountains trip and treat Kolsai and Kaindy as a bonus rather than a booking.

Fitting it to the Indian holiday calendar

Weather is only half the decision. The other half is when Indians can actually travel.

• Summer school holidays, May and June. May is wet and the mountain roads are unreliable. June is the first genuinely good month and is the one to aim for if you are travelling with school-age children.
• Diwali, October or November. October is excellent: autumn colour in the gorges, an average 5.4C to 16.9C in Almaty, and the cheapest month of the year to travel. Early November is the weakest week in the calendar, with neither snow nor summer.
• Christmas and New Year. Snow is reliable, but Shymbulak charges a flat 26,000 tenge over the New Year holidays, roughly Rs 5,500, against 9,000 tenge on an ordinary weekday, about Rs 1,900. Going a fortnight either side of the holiday saves real money.
• Holi and the March window. Late ski season, softer snow, thinner crowds, and the last reliable month before the April rain.

What the season does to your budget

Kazakhstan's costs move less with season than a beach destination's do, but two things shift.

Lift passes. A weekday adult day pass at Shymbulak was 9,000 tenge in the 2025/26 season, about Rs 1,900, rising to 12,000 tenge at weekends, about Rs 2,550, and that flat 26,000 tenge over New Year. The 2026/27 tariff is normally published in the autumn, so check before you book.

Everything on the ground stays cheap in any month. A metro ride is 120 tenge, about Rs 26, at an exchange rate of roughly Rs 0.21 to the tenge as of 14 September 2026.

Matching the month to the trip

The visa clock does not constrain your season

Worth saying, because it removes a planning worry: Indian passport holders get 14 days visa-free per entry, which comfortably covers any seasonal itinerary. You never have to compress a trip to fit the rule, so pick the month on weather alone.

What to pack, by season

• Summer: light clothes for the city, but a proper fleece or jacket for the mountains and lakes, plus sunscreen and sunglasses for the strong high-altitude sun.
• Winter: a real winter coat, thermals, gloves, and grippy footwear. Almaty pavements ice over.
• Autumn and spring: layers and a waterproof. April and May demand the waterproof.

In every season the rule is the same: whatever the city forecast says, the mountains are 10 to 15 degrees colder, and the mountains are where you are going.
