Getting Around Dubai: Transport Guide

A fare-by-fare comparison of Dubai Metro, taxis, Careem/Uber and car rental, sourced from RTA's own fare tables and current ride-hailing rate cards.

Dubai Metro: Zones and Nol Card Fares

The Dubai Metro network, run by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), covers the city on a 7-zone fare system, though metro stations themselves sit within Zones 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 (Zones 4 and 7 are bus-only and intercity routes). Per RTA's official Nol fare page, the fare depends on how many zones you cross, not the specific stations:

JourneySilver NolGold NolPersonal (Blue) NolRed Ticket
Within 1 zoneAED 3AED 6AED 3AED 4
2 adjacent zonesAED 5AED 10AED 5AED 6
More than 2 zonesAED 7.50AED 15AED 7.50AED 8.50

In approximate INR at 1 AED = INR 23.5: that's roughly INR 70-176 per single ride depending on zones and card type.

Silver and Personal (Blue) Nol cards are capped at AED 14 (approx INR 329) per day - once you hit that cap, further rides on those cards are free until midnight. A journey can include up to 3 transfers within 180 minutes, with each transfer between modes needing to happen within 30 minutes of the previous leg, per RTA's transfer rules.

Nol Card Types

  • Red Ticket: paper ticket for up to 10 trips, AED 2 (approx INR 47) for the card itself, standard class only, no discounts
  • Silver Nol: rechargeable card, AED 25 total (AED 19 credit + card fee), standard class on metro, tram and bus
  • Gold Nol: same AED 25 structure but grants access to Gold Class carriages on metro and tram, with a per-zone surcharge on those services
  • Personal (Blue) Nol: AED 70 total (AED 20 credit), registered to your name, eligible for the 50% discount available to students, seniors and People of Determination

For a short tourist trip, a Silver Nol card is the practical choice since it works across metro, tram and bus without registration.

Taxis

RTA-regulated taxis (the cream-coloured ones, plus women/child-only pink-roof taxis) run on a metered fare. Per RTA's own taxi fare page and current 2026 fare guides:

  • Street hail flag fall: AED 5.00 (day, 6 AM-10 PM) / AED 5.50 (night, 10 PM-6 AM)
  • App/phone booking: AED 5.00 flag fall plus a booking surcharge of AED 4.00 (off-peak) to AED 7.50 (peak)
  • Per-kilometre rate: AED 2.19
  • Minimum fare: AED 12 (approx INR 282)
  • Waiting charge: AED 0.50 per minute
  • Salik toll charge: AED 4 per toll gate crossed
  • Airport pickup surcharge: AED 25 (approx INR 588) additional, for taxis collecting passengers at Dubai International Airport

Careem and Uber

Both ride-hailing apps operate widely in Dubai. Based on current fare comparisons from Bayut and Dubai Updater's 2026 guides:

  • Careem Economy and UberX both run a per-kilometre rate of approximately AED 2.26, with a base fare around AED 5.00
  • Uber adds a per-minute idle charge of AED 0.50 and a booking fee of around AED 1.20
  • Careem also offers "Hala Taxi," a fixed-meter option using RTA's own metered rates (AED 2.19/km, no surge pricing) rather than dynamic app pricing

Both apps use dynamic/surge pricing during high demand (rush hour, major events, bad weather), so a fare shown at booking time can rise sharply compared to the metered RTA taxi rate - Hala Taxi is the way to avoid that if it's available for your route.

Car Rental

Self-drive car rental is available from major international brands and local agencies at the airport and across the city. Indian driving licence holders should check current UAE rules before travelling - an International Driving Permit is commonly required alongside your Indian licence for tourists, and requirements can change, so verify directly with the rental company or UAE's roads authority before booking rather than assuming your Indian licence alone will be accepted.

Airport Transfers

From Dubai International Airport (DXB), options include the Metro (Red Line runs directly to/from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3), RTA taxis (with the AED 25 airport surcharge noted above), and pre-booked private transfers through hotels or ride-hailing apps. The Metro is the cheapest option by a wide margin if your hotel is near a station and you're travelling light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is cheaper for a typical city trip: metro or taxi? Metro is cheaper for almost any trip - a single Silver Nol ride costs AED 3-7.50 versus a taxi's AED 12 minimum fare, but the metro only helps if both your start and end points are near a station.

Does the Nol card work on buses and the tram too? Yes, Silver, Gold and Personal Nol cards all work across metro, tram and bus in Dubai, which is part of why a Silver card is the practical choice for tourists over the single-use Red Ticket.

Is Careem or Uber generally cheaper in Dubai? Their listed per-kilometre rates are close (Careem and UberX both around AED 2.26/km with a similar base fare), so the cheaper option on any given trip usually comes down to surge pricing at that moment rather than a fixed difference between the two apps.

What is Careem's Hala Taxi and why does it matter? Hala Taxi is Careem's metered option that uses RTA's fixed AED 2.19/km taxi rate instead of dynamic app pricing, so it avoids surge pricing entirely when the standard Careem or Uber fare has spiked.

Do I pay extra for toll roads in a taxi or ride-hail? Yes, Salik toll charges of AED 4 per gate are passed on to the passenger in both RTA taxis and ride-hailing app fares whenever the route crosses a toll gate.

Is there a day pass for unlimited Metro travel? RTA's Nol system does not sell a flat "unlimited day pass" ticket type in the standard fare table; instead, Silver and Personal Nol cards are capped at AED 14 per day, after which further rides that day are effectively free.

How much extra does an airport taxi pickup cost? RTA-regulated taxis add a AED 25 surcharge specifically for pickups at Dubai International Airport, on top of the normal metered fare for the journey itself.

Can I use my Indian driving licence to rent a car in Dubai? Requirements vary and can change, so check directly with the rental company or the UAE's roads authority before booking - many tourists are asked for an International Driving Permit alongside their Indian licence.
