Rupee budgets for a couple, a family of four and a solo traveller, for 5 and 7 nights, with flights, hotels and extras included.

A Malaysia trip for two adults from India costs about Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh for 5 nights in Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands, all in: flights, hotel, food and the attractions you'll actually pay to enter. Stretch to 7 nights and add Langkawi, and the couple total moves to roughly Rs 1.26 lakh to Rs 2.05 lakh. A family of four is looking at Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for 5 nights, and Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 3.6 lakh with Langkawi added. A solo traveller can do 5 nights for Rs 48,000 to Rs 78,000.
All figures are approximate, in rupees for September 2026, at close to MYR 1 to Rs 23.48. Each one is a range, because your travel dates, hotel star rating and the attractions you pay for move the total more than anything else.
If you've priced Bali or Singapore, Malaysia's clear edge is paperwork: Indian passport holders don't pay a visa fee right now. That adds up fast for a family of four.
This is the classic first-timer shape: three nights in KL, two nights up in Genting Highlands for the cooler air and the cable car. Prices below are approximate, for September 2026, and assume flights from Delhi or Mumbai. The family rows price flights as four paid seats.
| Traveller | Flights | Hotels (3N KL + 2N Genting) | Activities, transfers & tourism tax | Food & local transport | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple (2 adults) | Rs 32,000 to 60,000 | Rs 24,600 to 35,700 | Rs 19,000 to 27,000 | Rs 10,000 to 18,000 | about Rs 85,000 to 1.4 lakh |
| Family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) | Rs 64,000 to 1.2 lakh | Rs 37,000 to 54,000 | Rs 32,000 to 46,000 | Rs 16,000 to 29,000 | about Rs 1.5 lakh to 2.5 lakh |
| Solo traveller | Rs 16,000 to 30,000 | Rs 17,500 to 26,000 | Rs 9,000 to 13,000 | Rs 5,000 to 9,000 | about Rs 48,000 to 78,000 |
I'd book the middle of that hotel range for most people: a clean 4-star in Bukit Bintang or near KLCC for the KL nights, and a mid-tier Resorts World hotel up top rather than the cheapest tower room, because Genting's whole appeal is the view and the cool air, and the bottom-tier rooms don't always get either. If your dates fall in a fixed departure that already bundles flights and hotel, price that against building the trip yourself before you book pieces separately.
Skip the two Genting nights if you'd rather spend them at the beach. Genting also works as a day trip from KL, which trims the hotel line.

Delhi and Mumbai have direct flights to Kuala Lumpur on several airlines, and off-peak return economy fares for one person typically run Rs 16,000 to Rs 30,000. Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Kochi also have direct services, mostly on AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia or Malaysia Airlines, and fares tend to sit in a similar band.
These are off-peak planning ranges for September 2026, not live fares, so run your own dates before you budget. Expect fares to run well above them over Chinese New Year in February, the Deepavali to Christmas stretch or the mid-year school holidays, and hotel rates rise at the same time, so the flight isn't the only thing that gets pricier that week. I'd book six to eight weeks out for the best mix of price and a sane arrival time.
Per head, the hotel is what separates a solo trip from a family trip. A solo traveller pays for a whole room with nobody to split it, so the hotel bill per head runs well above a couple's (about Rs 17,500 to 26,000 in the table, against Rs 12,300 to 17,850 each for a couple). A family of four often fits one larger room or two connecting rooms, so hotel cost per head drops below the couple rate, to about Rs 9,250 to 13,500 each. That is why a solo trip costs more than half of a couple's.
Seven nights is where you get to add a second base, and Langkawi is the more popular add for a reason: it's a short domestic flight of about an hour from KL, and it swaps the city and hill-station pace for beach time. Penang is the other common pick, closer to KL by road and better for food, but weaker on beaches. Here are the same three traveller types with two nights in Langkawi added to the 5-night KL and Genting base above.
| Traveller | Flights (intl + domestic add-on) | Hotels (3N KL + 2N Genting + 2N Langkawi) | Activities, transfers & tourism tax | Food & local transport | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple (2 adults) | Rs 44,000 to 79,000 | Rs 37,800 to 56,900 | Rs 30,000 to 43,000 | Rs 14,000 to 26,000 | about Rs 1.26 lakh to 2.05 lakh |
| Family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) | Rs 92,000 to 1.6 lakh | Rs 57,000 to 85,000 | Rs 51,000 to 73,000 | Rs 22,000 to 42,000 | about Rs 2.2 lakh to 3.6 lakh |
| Solo traveller | Rs 23,000 to 40,000 | Rs 30,500 to 47,000 | Rs 15,000 to 21,000 | Rs 9,000 to 16,000 | about Rs 78,000 to 1.24 lakh |
For comparison, here is a published 6-night KL and Langkawi package. It is land-only, so add your flights when you compare it with the table above:
I'd only add Penang instead of Langkawi if you care more about hawker food and old-town streets than beach time, since Penang gives you fewer beach days to build a trip around. Don't add both on a first Malaysia trip: seven nights already covers KL, Genting and one island, and a fourth stop turns it into an airport-hopping week rather than a holiday.
Packages differ a lot in what's inside, so read the inclusions before you compare prices. Some bundle return flights, and the land-only package above does not. Whichever you pick, check whether these sit inside the price or outside it:
Keep roughly Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per couple aside for this list, rather than discovering it meal by meal.
Bukit Bintang and KLCC are where I'd put most first-timers, since you can walk to dinner and the metro is close. Cheaper hotels a few stops out save money per night but cost you time every evening. The guide below shows what you trade off in each area.

Day to day inside KL, the numbers are small enough that they're barely worth a line item next to your hotel and flights.
Getting Around Kuala Lumpur: A Local's Guide to Transport CostsIndian passport holders currently get visa-free entry to Malaysia for up to 30 days, for tourism, business, social or transit purposes, and that arrangement runs until 31 December 2026. There's no visa fee to budget for, unlike Singapore or Bali. If you're travelling after 31 December 2026, check the High Commission of Malaysia page for an extension before you finalise the budget. The waiver has been extended before, but confirm it for your dates, and do it before you buy non-refundable tickets.
Visa-free doesn't mean paperwork-free, though. Every traveller has to file the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, online in the three days before you land, at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my. It's free, takes a few minutes, and you'll need your passport details, flight number and Malaysia hotel address on hand. Carry a confirmed return ticket and your hotel booking too, since immigration can ask for both at the counter, and make sure your passport has at least six months of validity. None of this needs an agent or a paid service. Paying someone to file the MDAC means paying for something the government portal gives away free.
Kuala Lumpur stays warm and humid year round, so weather moves your total less than the calendar does. Chinese New Year, the mid-year school holidays and the Deepavali to Christmas run all push flights and hotel rates up together, since a lot of regional travellers are booking the same rooms and seats you are.
My rule of thumb is a shoulder window, March to May or July to September, outside the school holiday weeks and the Hari Raya break (its dates shift each year), with flights booked six to eight weeks ahead. If you're adding Langkawi, note that its dry season runs December to February, so a July to September beach leg trades lower prices for more rain risk.
If Singapore is also on your shortlist, price the two as separate trips before you combine them. The flights, the visa rules and the pace of each city differ enough to change your total either way.
See Malaysia packages and pricesFor two adults, 5 nights in Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands runs about Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh all in: flights, hotel, food and the attractions you actually pay to enter. Add 2 nights in Langkawi for 7 nights total and the couple total moves to roughly Rs 1.26 lakh to Rs 2.05 lakh. Both figures are approximate for September 2026 and depend heavily on your hotel star rating.
Return economy flights are usually the biggest single line item. Off-peak fares from Delhi or Mumbai run about Rs 16,000 to Rs 30,000 per person, and other cities land in a similar band. Folded into a 5-night couple budget, flights typically make up Rs 32,000 to Rs 60,000 of the roughly Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh total for two. These are planning ranges, not live fares.
A family of two adults and two kids should budget about Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for 5 nights in Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands, and roughly Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 3.6 lakh for 7 nights with Langkawi added. Those ranges price flights as four paid seats. Hotel cost per head is usually lower than a couple's, since a family often fits one larger room instead of two.
Yes, for now. Indian passport holders get visa-free entry to Malaysia for up to 30 days, for tourism, business, social or transit purposes, and this arrangement is valid until 31 December 2026. There is no visa fee, but every traveller must file the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online in the three days before arrival and carry a confirmed return ticket, a hotel booking and a passport valid for at least six months. If you travel after 2026, check for an extension first.
It varies, so read the inclusions line by line. The 6-night KL and Langkawi package shown in this guide covers hotels, transfers, the Genting cable car and Langkawi attractions, but leaves out airfare. Other packages bundle return flights. Either way, keep roughly Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per couple aside for dinners, any entry tickets the package leaves out and Malaysia's RM10 per room per night tourism tax.
Langkawi is the better add for most first-time visitors: it's a short domestic flight from KL, and it gives you a proper beach and cable car day that the KL and Genting leg doesn't. Penang is closer by road and better for food, but its beaches are weaker, so there are fewer beach days to build around. I wouldn't add both on a first trip; seven nights is already full with KL, Genting and one island.
Aim for a shoulder window, March to May or July to September, outside Chinese New Year in February, the school holiday weeks and the Hari Raya break, when flights and hotel rates rise together. Book flights six to eight weeks ahead. If Langkawi is on your list, July to September trades lower prices for more rain risk, since its dry season runs December to February.
