Singapore is one of the few international trips where you set the price yourself. The flight is short, the visa is cheap, and the city treats a backpacker on the MRT much the same as someone in a private car. What moves the bill is where you sleep, how many ticketed attractions you buy, and which week you fly. Vegetarian and Jain travellers are well covered. Ananda Bhavan and Komala Vilas in Little India, Gokul Vegetarian near Chinatown, and the Tekka Centre stalls all do familiar South Indian food, and Jain preparations are usually available if you ask when ordering. One caution: hawker stalls labelled vegetarian often share oil and utensils with neighbours, so strict vegetarians should stick to dedicated kitchens.

Transfers and getting around
