Singapore Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

Days, rupee budgets, visa basics and where to stay on your first Singapore trip

Singapore Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

Singapore is the trip most Indian families take first when they go abroad, and the reasons hold up. It is a four to six hour flight from the metros, the trains run to the minute, and you can eat a masala dosa at 8am and Peranakan food at 8pm without travelling more than three MRT stops. It is small too, so a well planned four or five day Singapore holiday covers the city instead of skimming it. This Singapore travel guide is the planning map for a Singapore trip from India: how many days, what it costs in rupees, when to go, where to sleep and how to book.

Why Singapore works, and who it suits

  • A first international trip with parents or kids under 12. Everything is signposted in English and nobody haggles.
  • Short leave. Four days off plus a weekend is a real holiday here.
  • Mixed groups. Grandparents get Gardens by the Bay, teenagers get Universal Studios, shoppers get Orchard Road.

It suits you less if you mainly want beaches (Bali and Phuket do that better for the money), or if the trip has to stay under about Rs 50,000 a head. Singapore is expensive, and planning does not change that.

How many days you actually need

  • 3 nights, 4 days: the core. Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, Little India, one Sentosa day.
  • 4 to 5 nights: the comfortable version. Adds Universal Studios or the Night Safari without making anyone run.
  • 6 nights or more: worth it only if you add Bintan, Batam or a Kuala Lumpur leg.

The common mistake is two nights bolted onto a Thailand or Bali itinerary. You spend both in queues and transfers, then leave thinking Singapore is a mall with a skyline.

Visa, in one line

Indian passport holders need a visa before boarding. It is filed electronically through an authorised agent, and many applicants now receive a multiple entry visa valid up to two years. Budget roughly Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 per person including agent fees (approximate), and confirm current fees on the official ICA portal, not on any blog including this one.

The SG Arrival Card is not the visa. It is a free arrival and health declaration you file within three days of landing. Copycat sites charge for it. Do not pay them.

When to go

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so the weather barely moves: roughly 26C to 32C, humid, with a heavy shower most afternoons that clears within the hour. There is no bad month, so plan around price instead.

  • Cheapest and calmest: late January to early March, and late August to early September.
  • Wettest: November to January. Still fine, just carry a poncho rather than an umbrella.
  • Priciest: Formula 1 race week (usually late September or early October), Christmas to New Year, and mid May to June when Indian schools break.

What it costs, in rupees

Approximate, per person, four nights including return economy flights from an Indian metro. The Singapore dollar has been running around Rs 65 to Rs 68, so check the live rate.

  • Lean: Rs 70,000 to Rs 90,000. Three star near Chinatown, hawker food, MRT everywhere, two paid attractions.
  • Mid: Rs 1,10,000 to Rs 1,60,000. Four star hotel, Universal Studios plus Gardens by the Bay.
  • Premium: Rs 2,50,000 upward. Marina Bay Sands or a Sentosa resort, private transfers.

Plan for the big tickets: Universal Studios around SGD 88 an adult, the Gardens by the Bay conservatories around SGD 53, the Zoo around SGD 51. A hawker meal is SGD 5 to SGD 8, which keeps the daily spend sane.

Where to base yourself

Singapore is 50km end to end with an excellent MRT, so location matters less here than in Bangkok or Dubai. Still:

  • Bugis and Kampong Glam: our default for first timers. Two MRT lines, mid range prices, good food downstairs.
  • Chinatown: best value, walkable to the business district.
  • Little India: cheapest beds and the easiest Indian food, older rooms.
  • Orchard Road: shopping and reliable four star stock.
  • Marina Bay: the view from the photos, at roughly double the price.
  • Sentosa: only with young kids and two full island days. Otherwise you commute to your own holiday.

What to do, and one honest skip

Do: Gardens by the Bay at dusk for the free light show, the Night Safari (better than the day zoo for most people), Chinatown and Little India on foot, and Jewel Changi on the way out.

Skip: the paid SkyPark Observation Deck at Marina Bay Sands. For similar money you can sit at the rooftop bar beside it, where the cover charge usually converts into a drink, and get the same view with a chair under you. Skip the hop on hop off bus too, since the MRT is faster and cheaper.

Eating, including pure vegetarian

Vegetarians eat well here if they know where to look. Little India has Komala Vilas and Ananda Bhavan doing thali, dosa and Jain adjustments on request. Chinatown has Gokul Vegetarian. Most hawker centres keep a dedicated vegetarian stall.

The trap: a dish described as vegetable at a general hawker stall is often cooked with oyster sauce, fish sauce or lard. Ask first, or stick to the marked stall. This catches out more Indian travellers than anything else on the trip.

How to book

  • Flights: direct from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Six to ten weeks out usually gets the best fare, and midweek departures beat weekends.
  • Attractions: buy Universal Studios and the conservatories online before you fly. The gate queue is the worst part of the day.
  • Money: when the card machine asks whether to charge in INR or SGD, always choose SGD. INR hands the rate to the terminal and costs you three to four percent.

Know before you go

  • Contactless Indian debit and credit cards tap straight through MRT gates, so skip the transit card.
  • Fines for eating on the MRT and for jaywalking are real. Chewing gum is restricted.
  • Vaping devices are illegal to carry, not just to use.
  • Pack a light jacket. Indoor air conditioning is fierce.
  • Sockets are UK style three pin, so bring an adapter.
  • Tap water is safe, so refill instead of buying at SGD 3 a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Singapore?

Yes. Indian passport holders must hold a valid visa before boarding. It is filed electronically through an authorised visa agent, and many applicants receive a multiple entry visa valid up to two years. Costs are approximately Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 per person including agent charges. Confirm current fees and documents on the official ICA portal. The SG Arrival Card is separate, free, and filed within three days of arrival.

How many days are enough for a Singapore trip from India?

Four days and three nights covers the core city comfortably. Five days is the sweet spot if you want Universal Studios or the Night Safari without rushing. Beyond six days you are better off adding Bintan, Batam or a short Malaysia leg.

How much does a Singapore holiday cost from India?

Approximately Rs 70,000 to Rs 90,000 per person for a lean four night trip including flights, Rs 1,10,000 to Rs 1,60,000 for a comfortable mid range trip, and Rs 2,50,000 upward for premium hotels and private transfers. These are rough bands and move with the season and the rupee to Singapore dollar rate.

Is Singapore easy for pure vegetarian and Jain travellers?

Very easy. Little India has several pure vegetarian restaurants that handle Jain requests, Chinatown has Gokul Vegetarian, and most hawker centres have a vegetarian stall. The one caution is that dishes labelled vegetable at general hawker stalls often contain oyster sauce, fish sauce or lard, so always ask.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Singapore from India?

Late January to early March and late August to early September usually carry the softest fares and hotel rates. Avoid Formula 1 race week, Christmas to New Year, and the mid May to June Indian school holiday peak if price matters.
