Things to Do in Singapore: The Definitive List

Singapore is small enough to cross in an hour and dense enough that a badly planned four days turns into a mall crawl. The fix is to choose by type instead of working down a list: one water day, one nature morning, one culture afternoon, and serious eating throughout. Here are the things to do in Singapore that earn their place, with rough rupee costs, timings and when to go. Figures are approximate at about Rs 66 to the Singapore dollar, so confirm current prices officially before you book.

Water and Sentosa

• Adventure Cove Waterpark. Rs 2,600 to 3,200, four hours. The snorkel lagoon justifies it. Go on a weekday, at opening.
• S.E.A. Aquarium, now the Singapore Oceanarium. Rs 2,800 to 3,800, two hours. Rebuilt and repriced upward recently, so check first.
• Siloso Beach. Free, man made, average by Goa or Andaman standards. Come for the sunset beach bars, not the swim.
• Wild Wild Wet, Pasir Ris. Rs 1,900, half the Sentosa price, where locals actually go.

Most guides get Sentosa wrong. You do not need an island admission bundle: the Boardwalk from VivoCity is free or near free, the monorail is about Rs 300, and the Rs 2,300 cable car is a joyride, not transport.

Nature, mostly free

• Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree Grove and the Garden Rhapsody light show (roughly 7.45 pm and 8.45 pm) are free. Cloud Forest plus Flower Dome is Rs 2,000 to 2,800, two hours. Do Cloud Forest at 9 am.
• Singapore Botanic Gardens. Free, UNESCO listed, two hours. The National Orchid Garden inside is about Rs 1,000 and earns it.
• MacRitchie TreeTop Walk. Free, but the loop is 10 to 11 km and four hours. Start by 7.30 am and never hold food near the macaques. The Southern Ridges walk to Mount Faber is two hours and also free.
• Mandai parks. Zoo about Rs 3,400, Night Safari Rs 3,700, Bird Paradise Rs 3,200, River Wonders Rs 2,600, three to four hours each. The Zoo is world class; Night Safari is a tram in the dark, so pick one.

Culture

• Chinatown. Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, free, 45 minutes, shoulders and knees covered. Sri Mariamman, the oldest Hindu temple here, is two minutes away.
• Kampong Glam. Sultan Mosque, the Malay Heritage streets and Haji Lane. Free, 90 minutes, best at 5 pm.
• Little India. Free and better than tourists expect: Tekka Centre, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, shophouse rows. Deepavali here in Oct or Nov is a proper street display.
• National Gallery Singapore. Rs 1,300, two hours, set in the old Supreme Court.
• Changi Chapel and Museum. Rs 550, an hour, on the WWII prisoner of war camps. Pair it with the Indian National Army marker at Esplanade Park.

Food, and the vegetarian question

Hawker centres are the answer at Rs 350 to 600 a plate: Maxwell for chicken rice, Chinatown Complex for the cheapest good food, Lau Pa Sat for satay street after 7 pm.

• Pure vegetarian is easy if you aim for it. Komala Vilas, Ananda Bhavan and Murugan Idli Shop in Little India are under Rs 700 a head.
• Most hawker centres have a vegetarian stall. At Chinese stalls, ask about oyster sauce, fish sauce and shared woks: "no meat" and "vegetarian" are not the same thing.
• Jain travellers should stay near Race Course Road and call ahead. Tap water is safe, so carry a bottle.

Nightlife

Drinking is where a Singapore budget quietly dies: beer Rs 850 to 1,200, cocktails Rs 1,500 to 1,900. LeVeL33 has its own brewery and a Marina Bay view, CE LA VI sits atop Marina Bay Sands, both with a minimum spend. Better value is Ann Siang Hill and Keong Saik, five good bars within one walk.

Family

• Universal Studios Singapore. About Rs 5,500 an adult, a full day. Worth it if the kids have not done a big theme park. Weekday mornings only.
• Jewel Changi Airport. Rain Vortex free, Canopy Park about Rs 600, 90 minutes. Do it on a long layover, not as a separate trip.
• Lifts and nursing rooms are everywhere and the MRT is easy with a pram.

Two underrated picks

1. Pulau Ubin. The bumboat from Changi Point is about Rs 270 each way and leaves once it has 12 people; cycle hire is Rs 700 to 1,300. Half a day buys the Chek Jawa wetlands and the last village in Singapore.
2. Haw Par Villa. Free, 90 minutes, a 1937 garden of concrete dioramas built by the Tiger Balm family, including the Ten Courts of Hell. Nothing else here is like it. The Hell's Museum add-on at Rs 1,300 is skippable.

Honest skips

• The Singapore Flyer, about Rs 2,600 for 30 minutes. The Marina Bay Sands deck is higher and cheaper, and a drink at LeVeL33 costs the same.
• The Singapore Sling at Raffles Long Bar, roughly Rs 2,600 for one very sweet drink. See the lobby, take the photo, drink elsewhere.
• Orchard Road as a shopping plan. Phones, electronics and branded clothes are rarely cheaper than India once you account for the GST refund rules.
• Merlion Park is a five minute photo stop, not an attraction.

When to go

What to do in Singapore barely changes by month: 26 to 33 C, humid, all year. Feb to Apr is driest and Nov to Jan wettest, though rain usually arrives as a violent 40 minute downpour rather than a lost day. Avoid the F1 night race weekend in late Sept or early Oct, when hotel rates roughly double. Chinese New Year is atmospheric, but many hawker stalls shut.

Know before you go

• Indians need a visa in advance. Singapore e-visas go through authorised agents, cost roughly Rs 2,500 to 3,500 all in, and take three to five working days. Confirm current rules on the official ICA website.
• The SG Arrival Card is free and must be filed within three days before arrival, on the ICA portal. Paid lookalike sites charge for a free form.
• Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata take four to five and a half hours, return fares usually Rs 25,000 to 55,000.
• Skip the Singapore Tourist Pass. Single MRT fares are Rs 70 to 165 and you can tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard at the gate. Check your bank has international contactless enabled.
• Vapes are banned outright and carry real fines. Leave them home.
• Budget Rs 4,500 to 7,000 per person per day for food, transport and one paid attraction, before hotels.

Pick three or four Singapore activities that genuinely interest you, leave a morning free for a hawker centre and a walk, and the city stops being a checklist of Singapore attractions.
