The water, the culture, the food, and the two things worth skipping

Things to Do in Maldives: The Definitive List

The Maldives is one of the few places where doing nothing counts as an itinerary. But if you have flown four hours from Delhi and paid resort prices, you want more than a sun lounger. Here is the practical list of things to do in Maldives, grouped by type, with rough rupee costs, timings, and the right months. Figures are approximate, at about Rs 88 to the dollar, and swing hard by season and property.

Water: the reason you came

The Maldives activities that actually justify the airfare.

  • House reef snorkelling. Free at most resorts, one to two hours. On a good house reef (Vilamendhoo, Fihalhohi, Bandos) you will see turtles and blacktip reef sharks without a boat.
  • Guided snorkel safari. Rs 3,500 to 6,000 per person, half a day. Worth it once, for a channel or cleaning station the house reef cannot match.
  • Whale sharks, South Ari Atoll. Rs 4,000 to 6,000 from a guesthouse on Dhigurah or Dhangethi, Rs 9,000 to 15,000 as a resort excursion. Half a day, with sightings all year.
  • Manta rays, Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll. June to November only, Rs 9,000 to 16,000, three hours. Snorkel only, no scuba, and boat numbers are capped, so stay in Baa Atoll.
  • Scuba. Two-tank boat dive with gear Rs 11,000 to 17,000, a beginner Discover Scuba session Rs 9,000 to 13,000, a PADI Open Water course Rs 55,000 to 80,000. Rasdhoo for hammerheads at dawn, Fuvahmulah for tiger sharks once certified.
  • Surfing. Thulusdhoo and Himmafushi sit beside Cokes, Chickens, and Jailbreaks. Board hire about Rs 1,800 a day, season March to October.

Nature beyond the reef

  • Sunset dolphin cruise on a wooden dhoni: Rs 4,000 to 7,000, 90 minutes. Spinner dolphins are near guaranteed in the right channels.
  • Sandbank picnic: Rs 15,000 to 30,000 for two with boat and lunch, three hours. The most photographed thing in the country, and it earns it.
  • Night fishing on a dhoni with handlines: Rs 2,500 to 4,500, three hours, and the crew grills your catch. Rupee for rupee the best excursion here.

Culture: Male and the local islands

Male is a 20 minute ferry away and feels like another country.

  • Hukuru Miskiy, the Old Friday Mosque. Carved coral stone from 1658, on UNESCO's tentative list. Entry is nominal, you need permission to go in, dress modestly. Allow 45 minutes.
  • National Museum, Sultan Park. Rs 500 to 700, an hour, and honest about the 2012 vandalism of its pre-Islamic collection.
  • Male fish market, late afternoon. Free, 30 minutes, and the most real thing you will see all trip.
  • A night on a local island such as Maafushi, Dhigurah, or Thulusdhoo. Guesthouses run Rs 4,000 to 8,000 and the public ferry costs under Rs 200. This halves a Maldives budget without halving the trip.

Food, including the vegetarian question

Resort buffets nearly always run an Indian counter and many kitchens have Indian chefs, so vegetarian and Jain requests land well if you flag them at booking, not on day one. Local islands are thinner: fish curry, roshi, and mas huni everywhere, with two or three veg dishes. In Male, the lanes off Majeedhee Magu do South Indian and North Indian food for Rs 400 to 900 a meal. Alcohol is legal only at resorts, liveaboards, and the airport hotel, so a local island stay is dry.

Nightlife, realistically

There is no club scene. Nightlife means a resort bar, a sunset DJ set, a private beach dinner (Rs 12,000 to 25,000 for two), or a liveaboard deck. Cocktails run Rs 1,200 to 2,000 because everything is imported and taxed, so price an all-inclusive plan properly if drinking matters.

Family

  • Most resorts run free kids clubs from age four and many let under-12s stay free, but cutoffs vary.
  • Glass-bottom boat: Rs 3,000 to 5,000, 45 minutes, the right call for non-swimmers and grandparents.
  • With small children, pick a wide shallow lagoon (Kurumba, Paradise Island, Sun Island) over a dramatic drop-off house reef. A 30 minute speedboat also beats a seaplane.

Two underrated picks

  1. The public ferry network. A couple of hundred rupees to island hop, sharing the deck with schoolteachers and cargo, and the only way to see how the country works.
  2. The Dhigurah sandbank at low tide. A three kilometre spit of sand off the island's southern tip. Free, about an hour, and the exact photo people pay Rs 25,000 for on a private sandbank trip.

Honest skips

  1. Underwater restaurants. Ithaa at Conrad Rangali runs Rs 18,000 to 30,000 per person for a set menu. The fish look better on a Rs 4,000 snorkel. Book a drinks slot instead.
  2. Chasing the Sea of Stars bioluminescence at Vaadhoo. Most guides list it as a fixed attraction. It is an unpredictable plankton bloom, strongest on dark moonless nights roughly July to February, and plenty of travellers see nothing. Never pick an island for it.
  3. Jet skis and parasailing at Rs 7,000 to 11,000 for 20 minutes. Identical ride, a quarter of the price, in Goa.

When to go

What to do in Maldives depends on the month far more than at most beach destinations. Nov to Apr is the dry season: calm crossings, best visibility, highest rates, hard peak at Christmas and New Year. May to Oct usually means short heavy showers rather than all-day rain, rooms 30 to 50 percent cheaper, and the only window for Hanifaru mantas. Indian summer holidays in May and June sit inside that cheap window.

Know before you go

  • Indian passport holders normally get a free 30 day visa on arrival with a confirmed hotel booking, return ticket, and proof of funds, plus the Traveller Declaration filed online within 96 hours of travel. Confirm current rules on the official IMUGA portal before you fly.
  • Direct flights: Kochi and Bengaluru roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours, Mumbai about 3, Delhi about 4.5. Return fares are typically Rs 18,000 to 40,000.
  • Transfers are a budget line, not a detail. Speedboat is Rs 9,000 to 22,000 return per person; a seaplane is Rs 30,000 to 55,000 and flies in daylight only, so a late landing means a paid night in Male.
  • Every room rate gets service charge, TGST (around 16 to 17 percent), and a green tax of roughly USD 6 to 12 per person per night on top. Confirm current rates, they were revised recently.
  • Cover shoulders and knees on local islands and in Male, away from the marked bikini beach. That is law, not preference.
  • Carry reef-safe sunscreen, motion sickness tablets for dhoni rides, and buy an eSIM at Velana airport.

Pick the two or three Maldives attractions that actually matter to you, then choose the atoll around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best things to do in Maldives on a first trip?

House reef snorkelling, one guided snorkel safari, a sunset dolphin cruise, a night fishing trip on a dhoni, and a day in Male for the Old Friday Mosque and the fish market. That mix costs roughly Rs 15,000 to 25,000 per person on top of your stay and covers water, wildlife, and culture without cramming the week.

How much do Maldives activities cost in rupees?

Approximate per person: guided snorkelling Rs 3,500 to 6,000, whale shark trip Rs 4,000 to 15,000 depending on whether you book from a guesthouse or a resort, two-tank scuba Rs 11,000 to 17,000, dolphin cruise Rs 4,000 to 7,000, night fishing Rs 2,500 to 4,500. Resort excursions cost far more than the same trip booked on a local island.

Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?

Indian passport holders normally receive a free visa on arrival for 30 days, subject to a confirmed hotel booking, a return ticket, and proof of funds. You also submit the Traveller Declaration form online within 96 hours of travel. Rules change, so verify on the official IMUGA immigration portal before booking.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in the Maldives?

At resorts, yes. Most have Indian chefs and an Indian counter, and Jain or pure vegetarian requests are handled well if you tell them at the time of booking rather than on arrival. On local islands the veg options narrow to a few dishes, so Male, with its South Indian and North Indian restaurants off Majeedhee Magu, is your best bet for a proper vegetarian meal.

What is the best time to visit the Maldives?

Nov to Apr for the calmest seas, best visibility, and the highest prices. May to Oct brings short heavy showers, rates 30 to 50 percent lower, and the only season for manta rays at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. Indian summer holidays in May and June fall inside that cheaper window.
