The Maldives is one of the few genuine luxury holidays a short flight from home: leave Bengaluru after breakfast and you can be on a speedboat by lunch. That closeness also makes a Maldives trip from India deceptively tricky to plan, because the flight is the easy part. Which island you pick, how you reach it and which meal plan you sign up for are what make the final bill double or halve. Why the Maldives works for Indian travellers

• It is close. Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Kochi, Chennai and Bengaluru, about 3 from Mumbai and 4.5 from Delhi, with direct IndiGo and Air India flights into Male (MLE).
• It is one holiday, not a checklist. You settle on one island and stop moving. If you want three cities in five days, Thailand or Sri Lanka is the better buy.
• Food is not a problem. Jain or no onion no garlic requests are handled calmly at most resorts if flagged at booking.
• The honest limitation: outside Male there is no shopping, no sightseeing and no nightlife. You are paying for water, quiet and a room.

When to go

• November to April is the dry season: calm sea, low humidity, best snorkelling visibility. It is also peak pricing, with January to early March dearest.
• May to October is the wet season. Rain usually comes in short bursts rather than all day, rates drop 30 to 50 percent, and manta and whale shark sightings are strong.
• Best value windows: late April to mid May, and the first three weeks of November.
• Skip Diwali week and the Christmas to New Year peak unless you can absorb near double rates.

Where to base yourself

• A resort island. One island, one resort, total privacy, alcohol available, overwater villas if you want them. Most of the budget goes here.
• A local island guesthouse. Maafushi, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo and Thulusdhoo are real villages. Much cheaper, no alcohol, and you cover up outside the designated bikini beach.
• Hulhumale, by the airport. Worth one night at most, when your flight lands late and a seaplane cannot fly until morning.

Pick the transfer before you fall in love with a photo. A resort 20 to 45 minutes by speedboat gives you the same lagoon for far less money and no lost half day.

What most guides get wrong

First, all-inclusive is sold as the safe default, but most of its value sits in the alcohol. If your group does not drink, which is true for plenty of Indian families, half board plus a couple of paid lunches often works out Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 cheaper over four nights.

Second, skip the seaplane unless the resort genuinely needs one. They fly in daylight only, so a late arrival from Delhi can mean an unplanned airport hotel and a morning wait in a crowded lounge. A lovely 30 minutes in the air, and an expensive way to lose a day.

What to actually do

• Snorkel the house reef. Reef quality is the best reason to pick one resort over another, and it is free.
• A sandbank breakfast or a sunset dolphin cruise, both usually sensibly priced.
• Manta cleaning stations in Baa Atoll (Hanifaru Bay, roughly June to November) and whale sharks year round in South Ari.
• A night fishing trip, which families with teenagers rate highest.
• Skip the island hopping tour sold at resort receptions. It is often a short boat ride to a souvenir shop.

• US dollars work everywhere. Carry small notes for tips, roughly USD 5 to 10 a day for your villa host.
• Alcohol is illegal outside resorts and is confiscated at Male airport.
• Grab a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo eSIM on arrival; resort wifi thins out over water.
• Sockets are UK style three-pin, so pack an adapter.
• Reef-safe sunscreen is required at many resorts and costs a fortune there. Bring your own.
• Nothing is near a hospital. Insurance is not optional.
