Maldives Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

The Maldives is one of the few genuine luxury holidays a short flight from home: leave Bengaluru after breakfast and you can be on a speedboat by lunch. That closeness also makes a Maldives trip from India deceptively tricky to plan, because the flight is the easy part. Which island you pick, how you reach it and which meal plan you sign up for are what make the final bill double or halve. This Maldives travel guide is the map for the whole trip, and each section links to a deeper article.

Why the Maldives works for Indian travellers

  • It is close. Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Kochi, Chennai and Bengaluru, about 3 from Mumbai and 4.5 from Delhi, with direct IndiGo and Air India flights into Male (MLE).
  • It is one holiday, not a checklist. You settle on one island and stop moving. If you want three cities in five days, Thailand or Sri Lanka is the better buy.
  • Food is not a problem. Jain or no onion no garlic requests are handled calmly at most resorts if flagged at booking.
  • The honest limitation: outside Male there is no shopping, no sightseeing and no nightlife. You are paying for water, quiet and a room.

How many days you actually need

  • 4 nights, 5 days. What most Indian couples book. Two full days on the island, one for a boat excursion, travel days at either end.
  • 3 nights. Works only with a short speedboat transfer. Add a seaplane or a domestic flight leg and you lose most of two days.
  • 6 to 7 nights. Best as a split stay: two or three nights on a local island, then three or four at a resort. Beyond eight nights, most people run out of things to do.

Rough budget bands

Figures below are approximate, per couple, for 4 nights including return flights from an Indian metro. Season swings them by 30 to 40 percent.

  • Value, roughly Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh. Local island guesthouses (Maafushi, Dhigurah, Thulusdhoo), shared excursions, ferry or speedboat transfers.
  • Mid-range, roughly Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. A four-star resort, beach villa, half board, speedboat transfer.
  • Premium, Rs 5 lakh and upwards. Overwater villa, seaplane transfer, all-inclusive.

Two line items surprise people: transfers, which add Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 per couple at a seaplane resort, and government taxes (a goods and services tax plus a per night green tax) quoted separately from the room rate.

Visa, in one line

When to go

  • November to April is the dry season: calm sea, low humidity, best snorkelling visibility. It is also peak pricing, with January to early March dearest.
  • May to October is the wet season. Rain usually comes in short bursts rather than all day, rates drop 30 to 50 percent, and manta and whale shark sightings are strong.
  • Best value windows: late April to mid May, and the first three weeks of November.
  • Skip Diwali week and the Christmas to New Year peak unless you can absorb near double rates.

Where to base yourself

  • A resort island. One island, one resort, total privacy, alcohol available, overwater villas if you want them. Most of the budget goes here.
  • A local island guesthouse. Maafushi, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo and Thulusdhoo are real villages. Much cheaper, no alcohol, and you cover up outside the designated bikini beach.
  • Hulhumale, by the airport. Worth one night at most, when your flight lands late and a seaplane cannot fly until morning.

Pick the transfer before you fall in love with a photo. A resort 20 to 45 minutes by speedboat gives you the same lagoon for far less money and no lost half day.

What most guides get wrong

First, all-inclusive is sold as the safe default, but most of its value sits in the alcohol. If your group does not drink, which is true for plenty of Indian families, half board plus a couple of paid lunches often works out Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 cheaper over four nights.

Second, skip the seaplane unless the resort genuinely needs one. They fly in daylight only, so a late arrival from Delhi can mean an unplanned airport hotel and a morning wait in a crowded lounge. A lovely 30 minutes in the air, and an expensive way to lose a day.

What to actually do

  • Snorkel the house reef. Reef quality is the best reason to pick one resort over another, and it is free.
  • A sandbank breakfast or a sunset dolphin cruise, both usually sensibly priced.
  • Manta cleaning stations in Baa Atoll (Hanifaru Bay, roughly June to November) and whale sharks year round in South Ari.
  • A night fishing trip, which families with teenagers rate highest.
  • Skip the island hopping tour sold at resort receptions. It is often a short boat ride to a souvenir shop.

Honeymoons and anniversaries

A large share of Indian couples flying into Male are on honeymoon, and resorts price accordingly. What matters is villa type, adults-only versus family-friendly, and whether a private pool is worth Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a night to you.

How to book, in order

This is how to plan a Maldives trip without overpaying:

  1. Fix dates first. Season sets close to 40 percent of the cost.
  2. Shortlist resorts by transfer type and duration, not by photographs.
  3. Choose the board plan honestly, based on whether your group drinks.
  4. Book flights last, once transfer timings are confirmed.
  5. Buy insurance covering water sports and medical evacuation.

Know before you go

  • Vegetarians eat well; Indian food is on most resort buffets. Request jain or vegan at booking.
  • US dollars work everywhere. Carry small notes for tips, roughly USD 5 to 10 a day for your villa host.
  • Alcohol is illegal outside resorts and is confiscated at Male airport.
  • Grab a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo eSIM on arrival; resort wifi thins out over water.
  • Sockets are UK style three-pin, so pack an adapter.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required at many resorts and costs a fortune there. Bring your own.
  • Nothing is near a hospital. Insurance is not optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Maldives trip from India cost for a couple?

Approximately Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh for 4 nights on local islands, Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh for a mid-range resort with a beach villa, and Rs 5 lakh upwards for an overwater villa with a seaplane transfer. All figures include return flights from an Indian metro and shift by 30 to 40 percent with the season.

Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?

Indian passport holders get a free visa on arrival, normally valid for 30 days, with a confirmed hotel booking, a return ticket and proof of funds. You also complete the online traveller declaration within 96 hours of travel. Confirm current requirements on the official Maldives immigration portal before flying.

How many days are enough for the Maldives?

Four nights and five days is the sweet spot for a first trip. Three nights works only with a short speedboat transfer. Six or seven nights is best split between a local island and a resort, so the trip does not get repetitive.

Is vegetarian and jain food available in the Maldives?

Yes. Resort buffets almost always include Indian dishes and clearly marked vegetarian options. Jain, no onion no garlic and vegan meals are usually arranged without fuss, but tell the resort at the time of booking rather than at check in.

Which is the best month to visit the Maldives from India?

November and late April to mid May offer the strongest mix of good weather and fair pricing. January to March gives the calmest seas at peak rates, while May to October is the cheapest window and better for manta and whale shark sightings.
