Thailand Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

Thailand is the first international stamp in a lot of Indian passports, and it keeps earning that spot. Most metros are about four hours from Bangkok, the rupee stretches further there than at almost any other beach destination, and the country is varied enough that a honeymoon, a family holiday and a rowdy friends' trip can all happen in the same week without ever crossing paths. This is the map for planning a Thailand trip from India: how long to go, roughly what it costs, when to fly, where to base yourself, and how to book. Why Thailand works for Indian travellers

Flights are short and cheap, so even a five night trip pays off. The tourism setup is good at every price point, from a Rs 2,500 a night guesthouse in Chiang Mai to a beach villa that costs more than your monthly EMI. And it is forgiving for first timers: English signage, Grab cabs everywhere, and hospitals you would actually trust.

The honest trade-off: Thailand is no longer cheap in the tourist zones. Patong beachfront and central Bangkok now run roughly what Goa costs in peak season. The value shows up the moment you move one street back from the main strip.

Visa, in one line

At the time of writing, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand for short tourist stays without a pre-applied visa, and separately you must fill the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online in the days before you land. This policy has changed more than once, so confirm the current rule on the official Thai e-visa portal or the Royal Thai Embassy site before booking.

How many days you actually need

• 5 nights: one city plus one beach. Bangkok and Phuket, or Bangkok and Krabi. The sweet spot for a first trip.
• 7 nights: the same, plus two nights on an island like Phi Phi or Koh Yao Noi, or swap the beach for Chiang Mai.
• 9 to 10 nights: north and south together, or two island groups. Worth it only if you are fine with an internal flight and a ferry.
• 3 nights: doable as a long weekend, but stay in one city. Bangkok alone fills three nights.

The most common planning mistake is squeezing Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Krabi into six nights. You will spend two of those days in transit and remember airports instead of beaches.

What a Thailand holiday costs from India

All figures are approximate, per person, and swing a lot with season and how early you book.

• Return flights from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru to Bangkok: roughly Rs 18,000 to Rs 35,000. Kolkata and Chennai often land Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 cheaper.
• Lean trip, 6 nights, 3 star hotels, mostly local food and public transport: about Rs 35,000 to Rs 55,000 on the ground.
• Comfortable trip, 4 star hotels, private transfers, a couple of paid day tours: about Rs 65,000 to Rs 1,00,000 on the ground.
• Premium, beachfront resorts and a speedboat day out: Rs 1.75 lakh and up, with no real ceiling.

Day to day, a proper local meal runs 80 to 200 baht, and the baht sits around Rs 2.5 to Rs 3. Check the live rate before you load forex.

When to go

November to February is the easy answer: dry, cooler, busy. March to May is hot, with April touching 38 to 40 degrees, though Songkran in mid April is a fun reason to accept it. June to October is green season: cheaper rooms, and short heavy afternoon showers rather than all day rain.

Here is what most guides get wrong. Thailand does not have one weather calendar. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is wettest roughly May to October, while the Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is driest in exactly those months and gets its worst weather around October to December. A September trip is not a write off. You just point it at Samui instead of Phuket.

Where to base yourself

• Bangkok: stay in Sukhumvit near a BTS station on a first visit. Riverside is prettier but slower to get around from.
• Phuket: Patong for nightlife, Kata or Karon for a calmer family beach, Bang Tao or Mai Khao for resort holidays.
• Krabi: Ao Nang for the beach town feel, Railay if you want cliffs and no cars.
• Koh Samui: better for a honeymoon or a slow week than for a packed itinerary.
• Chiang Mai: temples, cooking classes, ethical elephant sanctuaries, cool evenings. A very different pace from the south.

A route that works for first timers

Bangkok for two or three nights, fly down to Phuket or Krabi for three, add an island night if you have time. Internal flights are cheap and take about 90 minutes, so use them instead of long road transfers.

Things to do, and one to skip

Book a Phi Phi or James Bond Island speedboat day, a Bangkok temple morning, a Chiang Mai cooking class, and at least one Thai massage per person. Skip the full day coach tour to Damnoen Saduak floating market: it is a two hour drive each way to a souvenir corridor with staged photos. Go to Amphawa in the evening instead, or spend the day in the city. Also skip anything offering tiger photos or elephant rides.

Food, including vegetarian

Thai cooking uses fish sauce, oyster sauce and shrimp paste as background ingredients, so a "vegetable" dish is often not vegetarian. Two words fix most of it: mangsawirat (vegetarian) and jay (strict, no animal products). "Mai sai nam pla" means no fish sauce. Sukhumvit and Pratunam in Bangkok, Patong in Phuket and Ao Nang in Krabi all have solid Indian restaurants, and most will do Jain food if you ask ahead.

Know before you go

• Book flights six to ten weeks out. Fares to Bangkok jump sharply inside three weeks.
• Carry some cash. Thai ATMs charge a fixed fee of around 220 baht per withdrawal regardless of amount, so take out larger sums less often.
• Download Grab before you fly. It ends every taxi meter argument.
• Buy travel insurance. Scooter accidents are the single most common Indian traveller claim in Phuket, and most policies exclude riding without a valid licence.
• Keep a printed hotel address in Thai for the first night.
• Immigration can ask to see a return ticket and proof of funds. Have both on your phone.
