Thailand Trip for a Family of 4 from India: The Real Cost

Budget Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for two adults and two kids for six nights in Thailand, flying from Delhi, staying in a family-friendly hotel and doing two paid attractions, one of them a Bangkok day trip (approximate, as of September 2026). That is higher than the "starting from" price on many package brochures, which are usually priced per adult. Kids aren't free. The extra money goes on three things: the hotel's extra-bed charge, child tickets once a child passes a height line, and the meals you end up buying because the hotel breakfast stops working for a five year old by day two.

Item by item: what the trip costs

This is for two adults and two kids, ages 5 and 10, six nights, based out of Pattaya with one day trip into Bangkok. This is a costing scenario, not a trip diary. Every number is approximate and dated to September 2026, and I've used an exchange rate of about Rs 2.87 to the Thai baht (Wise mid-market rate, September 2026).

Add it up and you land close to Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh, before shopping and before the ice creams and arcade tokens that a five year old will ask for at least twice a day. I'd keep a buffer of another Rs 10,000 to 15,000 on top for exactly that.

Flights for two adults and two kids

Plan on roughly Rs 24,000 to 28,000 per person round trip for non-stop Delhi to Bangkok flights as of September 2026, if you book six to eight weeks ahead. Fares move week to week, so check live prices before you lock the budget. The catch: a child ticket on an international economy fare is usually only a little cheaper than an adult one, and sometimes barely cheaper at all. Budget close to the adult fare for both kids rather than assuming a steep child discount. Only an infant under two flies at a big discount.

Timing matters too. A lot of the cheapest non-stop options land in Bangkok in the very early morning or leave Delhi close to midnight. That works for a solo traveller who can sleep on the plane and power through. With kids of 5 and 10, one of them cranky at 4 am and the other due back at school, I'd pay the small premium for a mid-morning or afternoon departure over the absolute cheapest red-eye. You lose a bit on the fare and gain a functioning first day.

Pattaya or Phuket: pick the base, not both

Both work for a family trip. They don't work the same way, and trying to cover both in six nights with young kids means more time in transit than at the pool.

Pattaya is about two hours by road from Suvarnabhumi airport, so it works as a beach base if you land in Bangkok. Safari World and Dream World are on the Bangkok side, not in Pattaya. Safari World is in east Bangkok and Dream World is in Pathum Thani, north of the city, so each is a long drive from Pattaya and Dream World is the longer of the two. Plan one park per day out, not both, and expect four hours or more on the road for the round trip to Safari World. Pattaya itself has Columbia Pictures Aquaverse (the former Cartoon Network Amazone water park, south of the city towards Na Jomtien) and the Sanctuary of Truth. The hotel stock leans mid-range rather than resort-grade, which usually means a lower nightly rate for the same square footage.

Phuket is a flight or a long drive further out, but the beaches are better, the resorts are built with families in mind rather than retrofitted for them, and attractions like Aquaria Phuket and the FantaSea show are a taxi ride from most beach areas rather than a half-day excursion. It also tends to run more expensive: Phuket fares from Indian cities can run higher per head than Delhi to Bangkok, so compare live fares before you decide.

My take: with kids under eight, I'd lean Pattaya for the shorter transfers, and pick a hotel on the Jomtien or Naklua side, away from Walking Street. Skip Pattaya if you want a kids' club and a quiet beach in front of the hotel. With kids of eight and up who can handle a longer travel day, Phuket's beaches are worth the extra spend.

Hotels: child with bed versus child without bed

This is the line item that trips people up, so sort it out before you book. Thai hotels price a child two different ways, and the difference isn't about age, it's about the bed.

A child "without bed" or "sharing" means your child sleeps in the bedding already in the room, no rollaway, no extra mattress. Plenty of hotels let a child under a certain age, often somewhere between four and twelve depending on the property, stay this way for free or for a small breakfast supplement. A child "with bed" means the hotel is bringing in an extra bed or rollaway, and that's charged separately, often somewhere around Rs 2,800 to Rs 4,500 a night.

For two adults and two kids, you're choosing between three setups: one family room if the property has them, which not all do; two connecting standard rooms, which usually costs close to two full room rates; or one larger room plus an extra bed for the older child. I'd ask "sharing or extra bed" for each child's age when you enquire, because a quote built on the cheapest option can turn into a room that technically sleeps four but won't comfortably fit four suitcases and two kids who want space to move.

Safari World, Dream World, and the heights that decide your ticket price

Thai attractions price children by height, not age, and this matters more than most guides let on. At Safari World, a child measuring 99 centimetres or under gets in free, and a child between 100 and 140 centimetres pays a reduced ticket, currently around THB 350, while an adult ticket runs roughly THB 780 to 1,130 depending on which combo you book. For the four of you that's about Rs 6,500 to 8,500 in tickets, and the rest of the day-trip line in the table is the private van. At Dream World, the free cutoff is 90 centimetres, with the child rate applying from 91 to 145 centimetres. Packages start from about THB 999 for adults and children alike, so the child rate saves little here once your kid is over the free line. Both sets of figures come from ticket resellers, so confirm on the park's own site.

For a family with a five and a ten year old, a typical five year old is taller than both free cutoffs, so expect to pay the child rate for them. A ten year old is usually under the 140 centimetre line at Safari World, but a tall one can cross it. A couple of centimetres either way changes what you pay, and staff can measure at the gate, not go by your child's passport. Measure your child at home before you fly and check the current chart, because these bands do shift.

If you base yourself in Phuket instead, check the child chart at Aquaria Phuket and the FantaSea show before you book, because some attractions price by age and some by height.

Food: your backup plan for the fussy eater

The Rs 18,000 to 24,000 meals line in the table works out to Rs 3,000 to 4,000 a day for four, assuming hotel breakfast is included and you eat lunch and dinner at ordinary restaurants and food courts.

Thai food leans on fish sauce and shrimp paste more than most first-time visitors expect, including in dishes that look vegetarian on the menu. If anyone in your family is strict vegetarian, ask for no fish sauce and no oyster sauce rather than assuming "veg" on a menu means what it does at home. Beyond that, Pattaya's and Phuket's tourist areas both have plenty of Indian restaurants, so you're never more than a short tuk-tuk ride from dal and rice on a night when nobody wants to negotiate with a menu.

For the days in between, 7-Eleven is on nearly every corner and stocks instant noodles, packaged snacks and fruit that a fussy eater will usually accept, and international chains from McDonald's to Subway are everywhere in both cities. I wouldn't plan every meal around them, but I'd stop treating a 7-Eleven run as a failure. Some evenings it's the difference between a calm dinner and a meltdown two hours past a tired child's bedtime.

Visa and paperwork: what changed for Indians in September 2026

Check this before you book, because the rule changed recently. From 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders get a 30-day visa-free entry for tourism into Thailand, under a revised scheme announced by the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi. Thirty days is still far more than a six-night family trip needs, so it only matters if you're stretching the trip toward a month.

Separately, every traveller, including Indians entering visa-free, has to file a Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before arrival. It's free and takes a few minutes per traveller. You can submit it up to 72 hours before you land, and not earlier, so do it a day or two before you fly rather than the week before. Every child needs to be covered too: you can submit as an individual or as a family group, but each child's details and passport have to be included. Don't pay a third-party site to do this for you; the official form doesn't charge a fee.

What I would cut first

If I were planning this trip for a family like this, I'd book one theme park day, not two. Pick Safari World or Dream World, not both. A second park means a second set of tickets and a second long transfer from Pattaya, and that money does more as a better hotel category. Young kids usually want the hotel pool by day four more than another set of rides. I'd also skip the long day trip to a far-flung island if your base is Pattaya. The boat ride alone eats into the day and everyone's patience, and Pattaya's closer beaches do a perfectly good job for an afternoon with young kids. Dropping that second outing takes about Rs 10,000 to 14,000 out of the table above.

What I wouldn't cut is the extra bed or the bigger room. A family of four in a room built for two, with kids climbing over you at 6 am, isn't a saving worth making on a trip this short. Spend on the space, spend on the flight timing, and claw the money back from the second outing instead.
