Thailand Itinerary: Bangkok, Phuket and the Islands

Thailand is the trip most Indian travellers take first, and the Bangkok-plus-islands route stays popular because it genuinely works. You land in Bangkok for temples, markets and street food, then fly south to warm water and longtail boats. The mistake almost everyone makes is the split: they either park too long in the city or try to cram three islands into two days and spend the holiday in transit. This itinerary fixes that. A few days in Bangkok, then Phuket or Krabi as your one island base, with day trips out to the Phi Phi islands and James Bond Island. Here is how to divide the days so each part gets room to breathe.

How to split a 7-night trip

Seven nights is the sweet spot for a first visit and lines up neatly with flight schedules from India. A reliable division:

• Bangkok: 2 to 3 nights
• Island base (Phuket or Krabi): 4 to 5 nights

Resist adding a second island on a week-long trip. Each hop costs you a checkout, a transfer and roughly half a day. If you have 9 or 10 nights, then splitting the beach half between Phuket and Krabi starts to pay off. For a first trip, one base with day trips beats island-hopping every time.

Bangkok: temples, markets and street food

Give Bangkok two full days and you will see the headline sights without rushing. Start early at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho (the reclining Buddha), then take the public river ferry across to Wat Arun for about 5 baht. Temple dress code is strict and enforced: shoulders and knees covered, for men and women both. The Grand Palace ticket runs around 500 baht (roughly Rs 1,300, approx).

Spend an afternoon on the water. A longtail boat through the Thonburi canals, about 1,000 to 1,500 baht for the boat, shows you the older, quieter city. For shopping, Chatuchak weekend market is the one to time your dates around; on weekdays MBK and the Siam malls cover it. Eat where the queues are. A plate of boat noodles or pad thai from a busy stall costs 60 to 80 baht (about Rs 150 to 200, approx) and rarely disappoints. One thing many guides oversell: the floating markets. Damnoen Saduak is a two-hour drive each way and heavily staged for tourists. Skip it unless you have a spare day and really want the photo. Rot Fai night market at Ratchada, reachable by metro, is a better evening.

Flying south: Phuket or Krabi?

Both are about 90 minutes by air from Bangkok, and cheap domestic flights run all day on AirAsia, Thai Lion and Nok Air. Book the flight, not the bus: one-way fares are often Rs 2,500 to 4,500 (approx) a couple of weeks out, and an overnight bus saves almost nothing once you count the lost day. Which base you pick shapes the whole beach half:

• Phuket is bigger, busier and better connected. More hotels at every budget, more nightlife at Patong, and the quickest boat access to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. Good for first-timers who want everything on tap.
• Krabi is calmer and more scenic, with the limestone cliffs of Railay and Ao Nang as a relaxed base. A touch slower to reach some day trips, but the beaches around it are lovely and the pace is gentler.

Simple rule: Phuket if you want convenience and options, Krabi if you want a quieter, prettier base and do not mind slightly longer boat rides.

Phuket and the day trip to Phi Phi

From Phuket, the standout day trip is the Phi Phi islands. Speedboats and ferries run daily to Maya Bay (the beach from the film), Pileh Lagoon and the snorkelling stops around Phi Phi Don. A speedboat tour is faster and packs more in but pounds the waves; the larger ferry is gentler on the stomach and cheaper. Reckon on 1,800 to 3,000 baht (about Rs 4,500 to 7,500, approx) for a full-day speedboat trip with lunch. Go early to beat both the heat and the crowds at Maya Bay, which now caps visitor numbers.

Base yourself by the beach that fits your trip. Karon and Kata are calmer and good for families; Patong is where the noise and nightlife live. Keep one full day free for the resort pool, a Thai massage (250 to 400 baht an hour) and a slow dinner. You are on holiday, not working through a checklist.

Krabi, Railay and James Bond Island

If you base in Krabi, two trips are worth planning. The four-islands tour out of Ao Nang takes in Chicken Island, Tup, Poda and Phra Nang beach, and a longtail or kayak run gets you to Railay, a cliff-backed peninsula reachable only by boat. Railay is short on transfers and long on views; day-trip it or stay a night.

James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) sits in Phang Nga Bay, that field of limestone karsts made famous by the Bond film. It is an easy day trip from both Phuket and Krabi, usually bundled with sea-kayaking through the caves and mangroves. Be honest with yourself: the island itself is touristy and busy, more a scenery-and-photos morning than a beach day. The kayaking is the real reason to go, so pick a tour that gives you proper time in the caves rather than 15 rushed minutes.

Money, SIMs and getting around

• The currency is the Thai baht (roughly 2.5 baht to a rupee at the time of writing). Carry cash for markets, boats and small stalls; cards work in malls and hotels but not everywhere.
• Grab, the ride app, works well in Bangkok and Phuket and saves you haggling with taxis and tuk-tuks.
• Buy a tourist SIM at the airport (AIS, True or dtac), around 300 baht for a week of data. Useful for maps and Grab.
• Domestic flights beat overnight buses for the Bangkok-to-south leg. Book a couple of weeks ahead for the best fares.

Know before you go

• The best time to visit the Thailand islands is roughly Nov to Apr, the dry season. The monsoon months can mean choppy seas and cancelled boat trips.
• Indian passport holders can usually get a visa on arrival or an e-visa; check the current rules before you fly, as they change often.
• Temples enforce a dress code. Carry a light scarf or wrap.
• Book Phi Phi and James Bond tours a day or two ahead in peak season; the good early-morning slots sell out.
• Agree tuk-tuk fares before getting in, or just use Grab.
• Carry reef-safe sunscreen. Some marine parks ask for it and it is kinder to the coral.

Thailand rewards a light plan and loose days more than a packed spreadsheet. Nail the split, one city stint and one island base, and the rest falls into place.
