Skiing in Kazakhstan: Shymbulak and the Almaty Ski Season

Indian skiers have a short list: Gulmarg, Auli, Manali, and then a long jump to Europe or Japan. Kazakhstan sits in a gap almost nobody has noticed, and the numbers are the argument.

The resort

Shymbulak is Central Asia's biggest ski resort, in a gorge of the Zailiysky Alatau about 25 km from the centre of Almaty. The base sits at roughly 2,230 metres and the gondola runs to an upper station at 3,163 metres, with the skiable range usually given as 2,200 to 3,200 metres.

That altitude is the whole story. It gives Shymbulak one of the longest seasons in the region: mid to late November until close to May, which is longer than most European resorts at comparable latitude and dramatically longer than anything in India.

Below it, in the same gorge, is Medeu: the world's highest large skating rink at 1,691 metres, built in 1972, with 10,500 square metres of ice and over a hundred world speed-skating records to its name. The two share one road, so a ski trip includes a skating rink whether you planned it or not.

What it costs

This is the part that makes the case. In the 2025/26 season:

Night skiing runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Two honest caveats before anyone books on these numbers. Equipment hire and lessons are on top of the pass. And the 2026/27 tariff is normally published in the autumn, and prices move most years, so check the resort's own app or site before you travel rather than trusting last season's figures.

Even allowing for both, a day on a lift-served 3,000-metre mountain for under Rs 2,600 is a different order of pricing from Europe or Japan.

Getting there is the real advantage

Delhi to Almaty is 3 hours 25 minutes non-stop, 7 flights a week. Almaty to Shymbulak is a short drive up one road. Indian passport holders need no visa for stays up to 14 days.

Compare that to the logistics of a Japan or Alps ski trip and the gap is not marginal. You can leave Delhi at night and be on a lift the next morning.

When to go

The season spans mid to late November to close to May, but the reliable core is January to March.

Almaty in January averages -8.1C to 0.5C, and the mountain runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the city. This is a dry continental cold rather than a damp one, which most people find more bearable than the number suggests, but it is real winter and needs proper gear.

Late season, March into April, gives you softer snow, longer days and thinner crowds, at the cost of less certainty higher up.

Avoid the New Year holiday window unless you have to: the flat 26,000 tenge rate applies and the resort is at its busiest.

What the skiing is actually like

Shymbulak has slopes across beginner, intermediate and advanced grades, served by the gondola and chairlifts, with the upper mountain giving the longer and more serious descents. It is a proper resort rather than a novelty hill, with rental shops, ski school, restaurants and hotels at the base.

For an Indian skier used to Gulmarg or Auli, the differences that matter are lift infrastructure and season length rather than sheer vertical. Shymbulak is a modern, lift-served mountain with a five-month season, which changes what a ski holiday can be.

Beyond the slopes

The same lift ticket buys a non-skier a view worth the trip. The upper station at 3,163 metres is above the treeline with the range opening out in every direction, and plenty of people ride up simply for that.

The resort also runs a long list of paid extras in and out of season: paragliding, quad bikes, an alpine park, a rope park, a zipline and horse rides. Most are weather-dependent and the resort recommends pre-booking. The Gorilla zipline is closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Altitude, sun and the two things people get wrong

Altitude. The top station is above 3,000 metres. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should take medical advice first, and everybody should give themselves a little time at the top rather than charging straight into a run after a fast gondola ride from 2,200.

Sun. High-altitude sun off snow is severe, and it catches Indian visitors out in a way winter sun at home does not. Sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen are not optional.

Lifts also close in high wind, sometimes without much warning, so build one flexible day into a short ski trip.

Is it worth flying for?

For a dedicated week of skiing, Shymbulak is a single-mountain resort, so it is not an Alps substitute where you can ski a different valley every day.

But for a four or five day trip built around a long weekend, with a short flight, no visa, a modern lift system, a five-month season and day passes under Rs 2,600, it is the best-value lift-served skiing within short-haul range of India. That is a narrow claim and it holds.

A practical plan

Fly Delhi to Almaty on a Thursday night. Ski Friday and Saturday. Take Sunday for Medeu, Kok Tobe and the city. Ski Monday. Fly home Monday night or Tuesday.

Four nights, two or three ski days, one city day, and no visa paperwork at any point.
