Azerbaijan Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

Azerbaijan sits on almost nobody's shortlist until a friend comes back with photos of the Flame Towers lit up at night, and then it is suddenly the only country anyone is asking about. For Indian travellers the appeal is practical as much as visual: a direct flight of well under six hours, an e-visa that clears in about three working days, and a country that reads part Europe, part Central Asia, part its own thing entirely.

Step 1: Sort your visa

Indian passport holders need an e-visa, applied for online through the official portal, evisa.gov.az. The standard e-visa costs a USD 20 state fee plus a USD 9 service fee, so budget about USD 29 (roughly Rs 2,550 at the September 2026 rate), and processing typically takes around three business days. An urgent 3-hour service exists for USD 60 if you are booking late. The visa is valid for 90 days from issue but only permits a single stay of up to 30 consecutive days, and payment is by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card only.

Step 2: Book your flights

Delhi to Baku is a direct route of about 5 hours 45 minutes, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines and IndiGo. Azerbaijan Airlines runs it as a daily service: flight J2058 departs Delhi at 05:26, and the return flight J2057 leaves Baku at 22:51, every day of the week. One-way fares start from around Rs 12,700 to Rs 15,400 in off-peak windows, with round trips typically landing between Rs 20,000 and Rs 35,000 if booked six to eight weeks out. Always confirm the current schedule against the airline's own site before booking non-refundable connecting flights from your home city to Delhi, since schedules do shift between seasons.

Step 3: Pick your season

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable windows, with Baku running 15-24°C. Summer (June to August) can hit 40°C in the capital, though it is also when the Gabala Music Festival draws international performers to the hills. Winter brings snow to Gabala and Shahdag, with skiing from December to March, while Baku itself stays relatively mild.

Step 4: Work out a realistic budget

A 5 to 7 day Azerbaijan trip from India typically runs Rs 55,000 to Rs 1,25,000 per person including flights, mid-range hotels, transfers and sightseeing. Budget travellers can complete a 5-6 day trip for roughly Rs 45,000 to 65,000 per person by mixing guesthouses with the occasional splurge. Step 5: Decide where to base yourself

Most first-timers split their trip between Baku's Old City (Icherisheher) for the history and walkability, and the Boulevard or Fountain Square area for restaurants and nightlife. If you are adding Gabala or Sheki, budget one or two nights in each rather than a rushed day trip both ways.

Dolma (stuffed grape leaves or cabbage rolls) and qutab, a thin griddle-cooked flatbread that has a vegetarian version filled with greens and cheese, are both easy to find and easy on an Indian palate used to stuffed parathas and rice dishes.
