7-Day Georgia Itinerary

Seven days is the minimum for Georgia to feel unhurried rather than a checklist. This route covers the country's four signature experiences: the old capital, the mountains, the wine country and Tbilisi's own old town, without cramming drive time into every day.

Day 1: Arrival and Tbilisi orientation

Land in Tbilisi, settle into your accommodation and use the afternoon for a gentle first walk through the Old Town: Freedom Square down to the Bridge of Peace. Keep this day light to adjust to the time difference and any early insurance/document checks at the border. Georgia sits only 1.5 hours behind Indian Standard Time, so jet lag genuinely isn't a factor on this trip, one advantage this route has over a similarly priced European or Southeast Asian holiday.

Day 2: Tbilisi Old Town in full

Cover Narikala Fortress (reachable by cable car), the Abanotubani sulphur bath district, Rustaveli Avenue and the Dry Bridge flea market. This is a full walking day; comfortable shoes matter more than any single sight.

Day 3: Mtskheta day trip

Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, sits under an hour from Tbilisi and covers Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery in a half day, leaving the afternoon free back in Tbilisi for a second look at anything you rushed on day 2, or a rest.

Day 4: Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi

This is the longest and most weather-dependent day. The drive to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) runs roughly two to three hours each way over the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres, taking in Ananuri Fortress and the Gudauri ski-resort area en route. Gergeti Trinity Church, perched against Mount Kazbek, is the day's highlight, reached by a further short jeep or hike from the village. Given the drive length, staying overnight in Kazbegi rather than returning the same day is worth considering if your schedule allows a rearrangement.

Day 5: Kakheti wine region

Head east into Kakheti, roughly 1.5-2 hours to Sighnaghi, the walled "City of Love" hilltop town, with Bodbe Monastery just outside it. A wine-tasting stop, aged in traditional buried clay qvevri vessels, is the natural centrepiece of the day; wineries in and around Sighnaghi and Telavi such as Pheasant's Tears are commonly visited for this.

Day 6: Flex day: Kutaisi extension or Tbilisi depth

If your week allows a fifth destination, Kutaisi (three and a half to four hours from Tbilisi) brings UNESCO sites Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery plus the nearby Prometheus Cave. If the extra travel doesn't appeal, use this day instead for anything missed in Tbilisi, a museum, a second old-town neighbourhood, or simply rest before departure.

Day 7: Departure

Keep the morning free for last-minute shopping (wine, chacha, handicrafts are the standard souvenirs) and head to the airport with buffer time built in for Tbilisi's traffic.

What day tours cost, in rupees

A private car for the Kazbegi day (day 4) starts from around 250 GEL for the whole vehicle, roughly Rs 8,000, split between however many of you travel (Viator). Some group tour operators price it per person instead, from around 135-175 GEL per person depending on group size, roughly Rs 4,300-5,600 (same source). For Kakheti (day 5), a full-day organised group tour with tastings commonly runs 60-90 GEL per person, roughly Rs 1,900-2,900, while a private guide for the day costs closer to 150-250 USD, roughly Rs 13,000-21,800, including transport (Georgia Spirit).

Adjusting for less or more time

With 5 days, drop the Kutaisi/flex day and combine Mtskheta into the same day as the drive out to Kazbegi if you leave early. With 10-12 days, add Batumi (five to six hours from Tbilisi, best with at least two nights given the distance) as a proper coastal extension rather than a rushed add-on.

The one thing this itinerary deliberately avoids

Trying to do Kazbegi and Kakheti on the same day, or as back-to-back long-drive days without a break. Both routes involve two-plus hours each way on mountain or rural roads, and stacking them back to back is the most common way a Georgia itinerary goes from relaxed to exhausting.

What to pack for this specific route

Layers matter more than any single item: Tbilisi's Old Town walking days are comfortable in light clothing for most of the year, but the Kazbegi day climbs to altitude on the Jvari Pass where temperatures drop noticeably even in summer. A rain shell earns its space in your bag regardless of season, and sturdy walking shoes matter for both the Old Town's cobblestones and any short hike near Gergeti Trinity Church.

Booking day tours versus arranging your own driver

For days 4 and 5 (Kazbegi and Kakheti), you can either book an organised day tour with a fixed group and schedule, or arrange a private driver for just your group. A private driver costs more but lets you set your own pace, useful if you want extra time at Gergeti Trinity Church or an additional winery stop in Kakheti that a fixed-schedule group tour won't accommodate.

Meals along the route

Georgian Military Highway stops like Ananuri and the Gudauri area have roadside restaurants serving standard Georgian fare, khachapuri and khinkali among them, so there's no need to pack food for the Kazbegi day. In Kakheti, lunch is commonly built into a wine-tasting stop as a pairing meal rather than a separate restaurant visit.

A note on altitude

The Jvari Pass on the Kazbegi route sits at 2,379 metres, and Gergeti Trinity Church itself sits at altitude too; most travellers feel nothing beyond mild breathlessness on a short walk, but anyone with a known altitude sensitivity should pace the day accordingly and stay hydrated.
