Mauritius vs Bali for Honeymoon: Which Is Cheaper for Indians?

Visa and entry: the paperwork question

Mauritius is the easier one on paper. Indian passport holders get visa-free entry for tourism, with stays of up to 90 days allowed on arrival. You still need a passport valid beyond your stay (six months is the safe rule), a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking and proof of funds; the Passport and Immigration Office lists these. There's no visa fee and no visa application, but you do fill in the free All in One Travel Form online before you fly, so do it in the days just before departure.

Bali runs on Indonesia's visa on arrival system, and Indian passports aren't on the visa-free list. The easiest route is the e-VOA through the official portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id, which costs IDR 500,000 (about Rs 2,700 at roughly 187 IDR to the rupee in late September 2026) for a 30-day single-entry stay that can be extended once. On top of that, Bali charges every foreign visitor a separate tourism levy of IDR 150,000 (about Rs 800), paid through the official Love Bali portal before or on arrival. Add the two together and you're looking at roughly Rs 3,500 per person in visa and levy costs before you've spent a rupee on the actual trip. It's a mild inconvenience, not a dealbreaker. Apply a week or two before you fly so the approval is in your inbox before you need it.

Getting there: flight time and cost from India

This is where the two destinations pull apart. Air Mauritius flies nonstop from Chennai (under 6 hours), Mumbai (about 6 hours 20 to 30 minutes) and Delhi (around 7 hours 30 minutes), but frequency matters more than duration here. As of September 2026, Chennai and Delhi each get one nonstop a week, so if you are flying from either city you need to book your dates around that single flight rather than the other way round. Mumbai has by far the best frequency, since both Air India and Air Mauritius fly it, and Mumbai and Chennai are the two cheapest of the three, with round-trip economy fares starting around Rs 57,000 to 60,000, and closer to Rs 77,000 to 79,000 out of Delhi because of the limited seat supply. IndiGo also flies Mumbai to Bali daily (launched October 2025), so Mumbai couples don't need to connect. From Chennai, Kolkata or Kochi you'll usually connect through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, adding two to three hours but keeping fares in a similar Rs 40,000 to 55,000 band. If you are flying from Delhi, Bengaluru or Mumbai specifically, Bali's flights are both cheaper and easier to book than Mauritius's.

The five-night cost comparison

Matching hotel tiers is the fair way to compare, so here is roughly what a couple pays for five nights, stay only, at similar quality levels. These are approximate ranges as of September 2026, since resort rates move with season and availability.

Add flights for two and a mid-range Mauritius trip via Mumbai or Chennai lands around Rs 2,00,000 to 2,55,000, while the same tier in Bali out of Delhi comes in closer to Rs 1,05,000 to 1,65,000, visa and levy included. That is a gap of roughly Rs 90,000 at mid-range. It widens at the upscale end, where Mauritius resort rates climb faster: about Rs 2,80,000 to 4,20,000 there against Rs 1,35,000 to 2,45,000 in Bali, a difference of roughly Rs 1,45,000 to 1,75,000. Bali villa rates usually include breakfast only, so add dinners on top, which narrows the gap a little but doesn't close it. These totals also price Mauritius from Mumbai or Chennai and Bali from Delhi, so your own departure city will nudge the numbers either way.

I wouldn't call Mauritius overpriced: resort quality there is high and half board covers proper meals. But if cost decides it, Bali wins most years.

Season can move these numbers as much as the tier does. The top of each range is Christmas to early January, when Mauritius rates can roughly double, and July and August are pricier there too. If your dates are flexible, shifting by two weeks can save more than switching resorts.

Beach resort vs beach-plus-culture

This is the vibe question, and it's really a personality question more than a cost one. Mauritius is built around the resort: lagoons, water sports, spa days, and evenings that mostly happen inside your hotel. It's calmer, less crowded, and better if you want a honeymoon where the biggest decision each day is which beach to sit on.

Bali gives you a beach holiday plus a country to explore around it: temples, rice terraces, Ubud's cafes, surf towns and nightlife in Seminyak and Canggu if you want it. That range is Bali's real advantage over Mauritius for a honeymoon. You can dial the trip toward culture and activity, or toward pure lounging, sometimes both in the same week by splitting your nights between Ubud and a beach town. I'd book at least one culture day in Bali even on a beach-first trip. You've flown all that way, and the temples and rice terraces are the part Mauritius can't give you.

Getting around is the other honeymoon difference. In Mauritius you transfer once from the airport and mostly stay put; a private taxi to Grand Baie runs about Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 one way. In Bali the roads are single-lane and traffic between the southern beaches and Ubud can take two to three hours each way, so most couples split the stay between the two instead of commuting. Budget for a private driver in Bali and very little movement in Mauritius.

Mauritius resorts often add honeymoon extras such as a room upgrade, a welcome drink or a candlelit dinner if you send your marriage certificate a few weeks before you arrive. Ask for them in writing.

Weather: picking the right month

Mauritius is driest from May to October, and May, June, September and October give the best mix of weather and lighter crowds. July and August are windier and pricier. Avoid January to early March if you can. That's cyclone season, and while a direct hit is rare, heavy rain and disrupted transfers are not.

Bali's dry season runs April to October, with May, June and September rated as the sweet spot for weather and crowd levels together. April and October are fine too, just warmer and busier at the edges. November through March brings the wet season: workable if you don't mind afternoon showers, but not ideal for a honeymoon where you want reliable pool and beach time.

If your travel dates are fixed rather than flexible, check which destination's season actually lines up with your dates before anything else. A Mauritius trip booked for February, or a Bali trip booked for December, changes the calculation more than any of the cost numbers above.

Pick Mauritius if you want a calmer, resort-centred trip, don't mind paying more, and would rather skip a visa application before you fly. Skip it if cost is the deciding factor and you'd be flying from Delhi on a fixed date.

Pick Bali if budget matters, you want some culture and nightlife mixed into your beach days, and you're comfortable filing a short e-VOA application a week or two out. It's also the better call if you are flying out of Delhi, Bengaluru or Mumbai, where the flights are easier to book, or if you like the idea of vegetarian and vegan cafes rather than resort dining. Skip it if the thought of long drives between areas puts you off.

Neither is a wrong choice. I'd lean Bali for a first honeymoon on a tighter budget, and Mauritius for a couple who wants the trip to feel effortless from the moment they land.
