Where to Stay in Mauritius: Areas and Resorts Honestly Compared

Mauritius is small enough that people assume hotel location does not matter. It matters more than the star rating. The island runs about 65 km top to bottom, most roads are two lanes, the airport sits in the far southeast corner, and the wind, the water and the food scene change completely by coast. Get the area wrong and you eat the same buffet seven nights running. Here is an honest comparison of where to stay in Mauritius for Indian travellers on a six to eight night trip.

Start with the airport, not the brochure

SSR International (MRU) is near Mahebourg in the southeast. Approximate one way transfer times by car:

• Blue Bay and Mahebourg: 15 to 20 minutes
• Bel Ombre (south): 50 to 60 minutes
• Belle Mare (east): 45 to 60 minutes
• Flic en Flac (west): 50 to 65 minutes
• Le Morne (southwest): 60 to 75 minutes
• Grand Baie (north): 70 to 90 minutes

A private transfer runs roughly Rs 2,500 to 5,000 per car each way (approximate). Air Mauritius flies direct from Mumbai and Delhi in about 6 to 7 hours; other metros connect via Mumbai or Dubai. Check your arrival time before committing to the far north. A 9 pm landing plus a Grand Baie transfer means checking in near midnight.

The North: Grand Baie, Pereybere, Trou aux Biches

This is the only part of the island with a real evening: restaurants along Grand Baie's Royal Road, a Super U for supplies, Indian places like Happy Rajah, and catamaran trips out to Coin de Mire and Gabriel Island.

• Best for: first timers, groups, budget travellers, anyone who wants to leave the hotel after dark
• Hotels: Trou aux Biches Beachcomber, Le Meridien Ile Maurice, Canonnier and Mauricia (mid range), LUX Grand Baie (higher end)
• Trade-off: the longest airport transfer on the island

One correction Mauritius hotels marketing never makes: Grand Baie's own beach is small and busy with boat traffic. The swimming beaches are Pereybere, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches, all within ten minutes.

The West: Flic en Flac, Wolmar and Le Morne

Flic en Flac has a long, casuarina-lined public beach and a strip of shops and restaurants. Cheaper than the north, quieter at night, best sunsets on the island. Dolphin trips leave from Tamarin; Chamarel and Black River Gorges are short drives inland.

Le Morne is the dramatic end of the west coast: the mountain, a wide lagoon, the best kitesurfing in the Indian Ocean. Good for couples and watersports people, but there is almost nothing outside the resorts, and the wind that makes the kiting good blows across your sunbed from June to September.

• Hotels: Sugar Beach, La Pirogue, Hilton, Sofitel L'Imperial, Maradiva (Wolmar); Paradis, Dinarobin, LUX Le Morne, JW Marriott (Le Morne)

The East: Belle Mare, Palmar, Trou d'Eau Douce

Best sand, widest lagoon, biggest names: Constance Belle Mare Plage, LUX Belle Mare, Long Beach, One&Only Le Saint Geran, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Four Seasons Anahita and adults-only Ambre.

The catch nobody prints is wind. The southeast trade winds hit this coast hardest from roughly June to September, and a beautiful lagoon turns choppy and cool. The second catch: you are captive. Almost no independent restaurants sit near Belle Mare, so a half board plan quietly becomes seven dinners across the same three hotel outlets. Here, all-inclusive earns its money. In the north, where you can walk to twenty restaurants, it is usually a waste.

The South: Bel Ombre, Souillac, Blue Bay

Greener, wilder, much emptier. The resorts cluster at Bel Ombre: Heritage Awali and Heritage Le Telfair, Outrigger, Shanti Maurice, and Tamassa, a good value all-inclusive Indian families keep returning to. Gris Gris cliffs and the Bois Cheri tea estate are close by.

Blue Bay, 15 minutes from the airport, is a different animal: a marine park with the best easy snorkelling on the island, plus budget guesthouses. Right for a first or last night, wrong for a full week.

Skip the central plateau. Curepipe and Quatre Bornes are residential and rainy, and Port Louis is a working port city best given half a day.

The split stay that solves it

For six nights or more, split between two areas. Do the busy coast first, then move somewhere quiet and closer to the airport.

• Nights 1 to 3: Trou aux Biches or Grand Baie for catamarans, island tours and restaurants
• Nights 4 to 7: Belle Mare or Bel Ombre to stop moving and shorten the final airport run

The internal transfer costs roughly Rs 3,000 to 6,000 and eats half a day. That is why a split stay is wrong for a four or five night trip. Book one base and take day trips.

• Self-catering apartment or guesthouse (Pereybere, Flic en Flac, Blue Bay): Rs 4,000 to 8,000
• Solid 3 star or small boutique: Rs 8,000 to 15,000
• 4 star beach resort on half board: Rs 16,000 to 30,000
• 5 star (LUX, Constance, Heritage, Sugar Beach): Rs 30,000 to 60,000
• Top tier (One&Only, Four Seasons, Shangri-La, St Regis): Rs 80,000 and up

Peak week (roughly 20 Dec to 5 Jan) runs 1.5x to 2x these numbers. Most of what gets sold as the best resorts in Mauritius sits in the top two bands; the 4 star half board tier is where the value actually is.

Know before you go

• Weather: May and September to early December are the sweet spots. January to March is hot, humid and inside cyclone season. July and August are cool and windy, worst in the east.
• Indian passport holders currently get an entry permit issued on arrival rather than a pre-applied visa, but conditions change. Confirm on the official Mauritius immigration portal before booking, and carry return tickets, hotel confirmations and proof of funds.
• Vegetarian food is easy. A large share of Mauritians are of Indian origin, so dholl puri and gateau piment are everyday street food and almost every resort runs an Indian night. Strict Jain or no-onion-no-garlic is harder: flag it at booking and lean towards Grand Baie or Flic en Flac.
• Driving is on the left, same as India. Self-drive rental is about Rs 2,500 to 4,000 a day. Book transfers through your hotel or operator; the arrivals taxi rank costs more.
• Ask two things before booking: is the beach swimmable at low tide, and what does "sea view" actually mean. Several east coast stretches go ankle deep a long way out.
