Mauritius Trip Cost from India: A Real Budget Breakdown

A week in Mauritius can cost Rs 70,000 or Rs 3 lakh, and both numbers are honest. The island itself is not expensive. What swings the bill is four decisions: when you fly, which coast you sleep on, what your meal plan covers, and how you move around. Everything below is per person for 6 nights and 7 days on twin sharing, and every figure is an approximate planning range, not a quote.

A mid range Mauritius package cost sold from India for 6 nights with flights usually lands between Rs 90,000 and Rs 1.4 lakh, and the variation inside that band is almost entirely hotel choice.

Flights: the line you control most

Air Mauritius flies direct from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport in the south east, about an hour by road from the west coast beaches. One stop routings via Dubai or Colombo save Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 but eat most of a day each way, which quietly costs you a hotel night. Book 8 to 12 weeks out and price all four cities, since Chennai and Bengaluru often beat Delhi. Peak pricing hits mid December to early January and the Indian summer holidays; February, March and September are cheaper with reliably good weather.

Where you sleep decides half the budget

Grand Baie in the north and Flic en Flac in the west have real towns around them: supermarkets, standalone restaurants, buses, street food. Belle Mare in the east and Le Morne in the south west are resort strips with nothing walkable, so you eat every meal at resort prices.

Here is what most budget guides get wrong. They tell you to skip all-inclusive plans because the sticker looks high. At Belle Mare or Le Morne all-inclusive is usually the cheaper call, because a resort dinner with drinks runs Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000 per person and the nearest alternative is a Rs 1,500 taxi away. So take room only in the north and west, and half board or all-inclusive in the east and south. That single decision is worth Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 across the week.

Food: easier for Indians than almost anywhere

About half of Mauritius traces its ancestry to India, and the food shows it. Vegetarian eating is normal, not a compromise. Dholl puri from a roadside stall costs the equivalent of Rs 60 to Rs 100 for two and is fully vegetarian. Veg briyani and South Indian options fill Port Louis, Rose Hill and Grand Baie. Jain or no onion no garlic food needs notice, so tell the hotel on day one.

A local restaurant meal is Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 per person, a beachfront tourist place Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,000. The Mauritian rupee is worth roughly Rs 1.8 to Rs 1.9 Indian, so doubling a local menu price gets you close.

Transfers and getting around

Airport to Grand Baie by private taxi is Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 one way. A rental car is Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500 a day plus fuel, and Mauritius drives on the left, so Indian drivers adapt fast. A car with driver runs Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 a day.

Buses cost the equivalent of Rs 30 to Rs 80 a ride and genuinely work in the north and west. The part nobody mentions: most routes stop by early evening and few run coast to coast. Keep bus days to daylight and budget a taxi after dark.

Activities, and one to skip

Skip the submarine ride. It is heavily sold at Rs 10,000 to Rs 14,000 per person for under an hour, and a Rs 4,000 sea walk or a snorkelling trip at Blue Bay marine park shows you more for a third of the price.

Visa, insurance and the small stuff

Indian passport holders currently get a free visa on arrival for tourism, so that line stays at zero. Rules change, so confirm on the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office portal before you fly, and carry return tickets, hotel bookings and proof of funds. Travel insurance is Rs 900 to Rs 2,500 for the week, and a tourist SIM Rs 500 to Rs 900.

What actually moves the number

• Season. Peak dates add 30 to 40 percent to flights and hotels.
• Occupancy. A solo single supplement adds Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000. Three sharing is cheapest per head.
• Meal plan matched to location, as above.
• Excursions. Four paid activities instead of eight saves about Rs 15,000.
• Booking window. Inside three weeks, flights alone add Rs 15,000 to your Mauritius budget.

Know before you go

• Aim for 6 or 7 nights. Five feels rushed after two flight days.
• Split the stay, three nights north and three east or south, to avoid long daily drives.
• Keep about Rs 8,000 worth of Mauritian rupees in cash for stalls, buses and tips.
• Cyclone season runs January to March, so book refundable rates in that window.
• Ask every quote to state meal plan, room category and whether transfers are private. Those three lines explain most of the gap between quotes that look identical.
