When to go

Where to base yourself

The island is about 65 km top to bottom, so nothing is more than two hours away by road.

• North (Grand Baie, Pereybere, Trou aux Biches): the most restaurants, shops and boat operators. Best for first-timers and families who want options outside the hotel.

What to actually do

A workable shortlist: Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths and its waterfall, a short walk in Black River Gorges National Park, Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) with the Mangal Mahadev statue, Port Louis Central Market, a catamaran day to Ile aux Cerfs, snorkelling at Blue Bay Marine Park, and the Le Morne Brabant climb if you are reasonably fit.

One genuine skip: the famous "underwater waterfall" at Le Morne. It is an optical illusion made by sand and silt sliding down a shelf, visible only from a helicopter or seaplane that costs a serious amount for a short flight. Food, money and driving

Vegetarian eating is easy. Street staples like dholl puri, farata, gateau piment and vegetable rougaille are vegetarian by default, and every resort runs a vegetarian buffet line.
