Why Mauritius over the usual suspects

When to go

There are two broad seasons. The island is about 65 km top to bottom, so nothing is more than two hours away by road.

• North (Grand Baie, Pereybere, Trou aux Biches): the most restaurants, shops and boat operators. Best for first-timers and families who want options outside the hotel.
• West (Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Le Morne): sunsets, dolphin watching, kitesurfing, and the shortest drive to Chamarel and Black River Gorges.
• East (Belle Mare, Trou d'Eau Douce, Palmar): the prettiest lagoons and quietest beaches, but windier and thin on dining outside the resorts.
• South (Bel Ombre, Blue Bay, Mahebourg): wilder coastline, closest to the airport, best value on large resorts.

Here is what most itineraries get wrong. They split a 6-night trip across two hotels to give you "both coasts". On an island this small that costs you half a day of packing and checking in, for a view you could have had by driving there after breakfast. Pick one base and rent a car.

What to actually do

A workable shortlist: Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths and its waterfall, a short walk in Black River Gorges National Park, Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) with the Mangal Mahadev statue, Port Louis Central Market, a catamaran day to Ile aux Cerfs, snorkelling at Blue Bay Marine Park, and the Le Morne Brabant climb if you are reasonably fit.

One genuine skip: the famous "underwater waterfall" at Le Morne. It is an optical illusion made by sand and silt sliding down a shelf, visible only from a helicopter or seaplane that costs a serious amount for a short flight. Book that ride for the aerial view of the peninsula, not for a waterfall.

Honeymoons

Mauritius is one of the easiest honeymoon bookings from India, largely because the all-inclusive model genuinely works here. On the east and south coasts there is little walkable dining outside the resorts, so half board or all-inclusive usually saves money. Carry your marriage certificate: many resorts give a room upgrade, a cake or a private dinner against proof, and will not take your word at check-in.

Food, money and driving

Vegetarian eating is easy. Street staples like dholl puri, farata, gateau piment and vegetable rougaille are vegetarian by default, and every resort runs a vegetarian buffet line. Jain food needs advance notice, so flag it at booking. The Mauritian rupee (MUR) is worth roughly Rs 1.8 to Rs 2 at the time of writing, so doubling MUR prices in your head is close enough. Cards work almost everywhere, but carry cash for markets and small cafes. Mauritius drives on the left, like India, and a self-drive car is the single biggest money saver on the trip. Carry an International Driving Permit with your licence.

Know before you go

• Book flights 8 to 12 weeks ahead. Diwali and Christmas sell out early and reprice hard.
• Sockets are mostly UK 3-pin, so pack an adapter.
• Buy a local SIM at the airport. It beats any roaming pack.
• Sea conditions differ by coast on the same day. If the east is windy, drive west.
• Indian hotel quotes are usually per person on twin sharing. Check that before comparing.
