Vietnam Trip from India: The Complete Planning Guide

Vietnam has quietly become the trip Indian families and friend groups book when Thailand feels done and Europe feels too expensive. It is a 4.5 to 6 hour flight from most Indian metros, the e-visa is simple, and the rupee stretches further than almost anywhere else in Southeast Asia. The catch: Vietnam is long. Roughly 1,650 km separate Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and three weather zones run at once. Plan it badly and your Vietnam holiday turns into a week of domestic airports. Why Vietnam works for Indian travellers

• Direct flights. Delhi and Mumbai have non-stops to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on VietJet, IndiGo and Vietnam Airlines. Routes change often, so confirm schedules before locking dates.
• Costs. A decent 3-star room in Hanoi's Old Quarter is about Rs 2,500 to 4,000 a night, a full local meal Rs 200 to 400.
• Range. Limestone karsts, a French-era hill town, 3,000 km of coast, heavy war history, and two big cities that feel nothing alike.

Honest trade-off: this is not a lie-on-the-beach country the way the Maldives or Bali is. Come for the movement and the food, not the beaches.

How many days you actually need

• 5 to 6 nights: one half of the country. North (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Lan Ha or Ha Long Bay) or South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc).
• 8 to 10 nights: the classic north to south run with a stop in the centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An).
• 12 nights and up: add Sapa, Ha Giang, or a real Phu Quoc stretch at the end.

What most itineraries get wrong: they squeeze Hanoi, Ha Long, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City into seven nights. That is four internal flights and three hotel changes. Cut a city, not a night.

Approximate, per person, and moving with season and exchange rate. Rs 1 buys roughly 300 Vietnamese dong, so a 3,00,000 dong dinner bill is about Rs 1,000.

For a comfortable 8 night Vietnam trip from India, budget roughly Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,20,000 per person all in. Two things quietly blow this up: internal flights booked late, and the bay cruise, where a poor boat and a good one are worlds apart.

The visa, in one line

Indian passport holders apply online for a Vietnam e-visa before flying, valid up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, approved by email in a few working days. The fee is modest (roughly USD 25 to 50 by entry type, about Rs 2,100 to 4,200), but treat no figure you read online as final, including this one. Confirm it on the official Vietnamese government portal and apply only there. The mistake people make: the "visa on arrival" agents advertise is not a walk-up counter, it needs a pre-approval letter arranged in advance, and the plain e-visa is cheaper. Keep six months of passport validity.

When to go

There is no single best month, because Vietnam runs three climates at once.

• North (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long): Oct to Dec and Mar to Apr. Jan and Feb are cold and grey, and the bay fogs over enough to hide the karsts.
• Centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): Feb to Aug is dry. Sep to Nov is typhoon and flood season, and Hoi An's old town floods some years.
• South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phu Quoc): Nov to Apr is dry and warm.

One window that mostly works everywhere: late Feb to April. Indian summer holidays in May and June land in the hot, humid stretch, workable if you weight the plan towards the coast.

Where to base yourself

• Hanoi Old Quarter: walkable, loud, best street food, launch point for Ninh Binh and the bays.
• Hoi An: the place everyone wishes they had given an extra night. Old Town fringe or An Bang beach.
• Da Nang: family-friendly beachfront hotels and a good airport, so an easy first stop.
• Ho Chi Minh City, District 1: big-city energy, best rooftops, base for Cu Chi and the Mekong.
• Phu Quoc: worth it only for 3 nights or more.

What to actually do

Pick four or five anchors and leave gaps between them. The ones that land with Indian groups: an overnight cruise in Lan Ha Bay (quieter than Ha Long proper, same scenery), the Trang An boat ride at Ninh Binh, a lantern evening and a tailoring fitting in Hoi An, the Hai Van Pass, and the Cu Chi tunnels in the south.

Skip this: the single-day Ha Long trip out of Hanoi. Most of those nine hours are bus and pier queue. Do an overnight on the water, or give the day to Ninh Binh.

How to book it

Book international flights first (8 to 10 weeks out is the usual sweet spot), then internal transport, then hotels. Domestic flights on VietJet, Bamboo and Vietnam Airlines are cheap early and painful late. Lock cruise cabins and private drivers well ahead in December, January and around Tet (Vietnamese new year, late Jan or Feb), when the whole country travels and prices jump.

Know before you go

• Vegetarians eat well, but ask carefully. Fish sauce and shrimp paste go into dishes that look vegetarian, including most "vegetable" pho broth. Say "khong thit, khong ca, khong nuoc mam" (no meat, no fish, no fish sauce) and look for "com chay" signs, which mean Buddhist vegetarian. Hanoi's Old Quarter and District 1 have good Indian restaurants.
• Carry some USD and change it to dong locally. Cards work in cities, less so in Ninh Binh, Sapa and small towns.
• Get an eSIM before you fly. Grab, the ride app, needs data and saves a lot of haggling.
• Cross roads slowly and steadily, never stopping halfway. Scooters flow around people who move predictably.
• Pre-book your arrival-night transfer. Negotiating a taxi at Noi Bai at 11 pm is the worst possible start.
• Keep a printed copy of the e-visa. Some check-in counters still ask for it.
