When to go

There is no single best month, because Vietnam runs three climates at once.

• North (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long): Oct to Dec and Mar to Apr. Jan and Feb are cold and grey, and the bay fogs over enough to hide the karsts.

What to actually do

Pick four or five anchors and leave gaps between them. The ones that land with Indian groups: an overnight cruise in Lan Ha Bay (quieter than Ha Long proper, same scenery), the Trang An boat ride at Ninh Binh, a lantern evening and a tailoring fitting in Hoi An, the Hai Van Pass, and the Cu Chi tunnels in the south.

Skip this: the single-day Ha Long trip out of Hanoi. Most of those nine hours are bus and pier queue. Do an overnight on the water, or give the day to Ninh Binh.

How to book it

Book international flights first (8 to 10 weeks out is the usual sweet spot), then internal transport, then hotels. Domestic flights on VietJet, Bamboo and Vietnam Airlines are cheap early and painful late. Lock cruise cabins and private drivers well ahead in December, January and around Tet (Vietnamese new year, late Jan or Feb), when the whole country travels and prices jump.

Know before you go

• Vegetarians eat well, but ask carefully. Fish sauce and shrimp paste go into dishes that look vegetarian, including most "vegetable" pho broth. Say "khong thit, khong ca, khong nuoc mam" (no meat, no fish, no fish sauce) and look for "com chay" signs, which mean Buddhist vegetarian. Hanoi's Old Quarter and District 1 have good Indian restaurants.
• Carry some USD and change it to dong locally. Cards work in cities, less so in Ninh Binh, Sapa and small towns.
• Get an eSIM before you fly. Grab, the ride app, needs data and saves a lot of haggling.
• Cross roads slowly and steadily, never stopping halfway. Scooters flow around people who move predictably.
