The one to actually avoid is Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year in late January or February: prices climb, domestic flights fill and many family-run shops shut for a week.

Book a multi-city ticket into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City. It usually costs the same as a return and saves you one internal flight.
